He's kind of a... Spirit I think? I don't know but he's dead, basically.
As a child, he was physically and probably sexually abused by his father, and one day, his father killed him in the stairs he haunts nowadays.
That's why you can hear a child crying.
Also, this is from another fanfic which I unfortunately don't remember but, if you reach the end of the stairs you can find his skeleton.
Also also, he makes the stairs endless. If he lets you, you can reach the end.
But that's rare.
He doesn't really trust anyone anymore.
