Prose and Poetry

The best poetry is finer than the best prose. Whereas the subject of prose is particulars, real or imagined, the subject of poetry is, or ought to be, more universal. It reaches for that ineffable something that lies beyond perception, beyond even our dreams.

Of course, there's plenty of bad poetry that makes no effort to do this, and a little great prose that manages to transcend the limits of its form. Even then, poetry takes us where we need to go with greater economy of word.
