"Hey, Sarge? Is here good for this stuff" I said, holding a bag of dirt on my right arm and the other one on my left shoulder while looking at Trudy.
"Yeah, there's good," She said looking up from the garden.
I dropped both bags of dirt on the ground before looking around the garden.
"So how long have you been volunteering here?" I asked.
"Eh, since it started. About six months or so. They used to build farm equipment here. They used to make things in chicago. But then the plants closed and all those jobs-" she said as she removed some weeds.
"Yeah, here we are. It's great for these guys though, right?" I said.
"Yeah. Man, you wouldn't believe what we found when we were clearing this out. Needles, all that. No wonder the city gave it to us for free. But, you know. Safe space, place for kids to learn how to grow things straight from the ground. It's a big deal' she said.
Looking down at some strawberries that were growing next to me I extended my arm out but was stopped by Trudy.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. That's ready when I say it's ready." she said in a stern voice.
"Copy that" I said, moving my hand back.
"Anyway, I want you to help me to spread some manure." She said with a fake smile.
"Aw, crap." I said whine.
"Turkey crap, to be exact." she said looking up to face me.
My radio soon went off 22-21, units on city-wide.
"Saved by the bell" I said, getting my radio from my back pocket.
We're getting multiple calls of shots fired in the area of 4000 Avers, North Lawndale. No further at this time.
"Four blocks, left on Avers, a couple blocks down" Trudy said.
"All right thanks" I said, holding my radio..
"Yeah" she said.
"Copy that. 5021 George responding" I said into my radio.
Pulling up onto the block in the alley getting out of my truck with my vest already on, I grabbed my radio, "5021 George, I'm on scene. I'm at 4400 Avers" I said into my radio.
One of the neighbors was standing outside where I was parked, "There" She said pointing to one of the buildings floor.
"Okay, how many gunshots you hear?" I asked hear.
