I watched Alex as she hurried off to the balcony, taking a call from someone named Jake. Probably the boyfriend. I thought grimly and then scowled. She's just a case, no more no less, and a rather unusual one as well. She tended to give off certain mixes of emotional energy which left me exhausted to keep up.

I shook my head and grinned in spite of myself, from the memory of how she almost left me permanently sterile. How can a frail girl possess such high fighting spirit and be shy and timid all of a sudden? And last night, I felt the confusion clawed within her, but as she spoke, she was calm as a lake. She was definitely a hard one to decipher.

I didn't know why I was suddenly hesitant to tell the reason she passed out-maybe because of her skepticism. But there was a shed of truth on what I told her; nothing really did happen, apart from the same sensation we both felt. Its presence was long gone once Vaughn and I scavenged the whole perimeter.

Vaughn finally awakened and broke off into a large yawn, which brought me back to reality. He stretched and flexed his body as he dragged himself to the kitchen. I must have looked like hell because he gave me a scrutinized look. "Did you even get any sleep last night?"

"No I haven't, it took hours going through all your audios and videos." I said coolly as I headed back to my study.

Vaughn followed seconds later with a fresh cup of coffee in hand. He rolled out a stool from a corner and took a seat beside me. "How did it go?"

"Nothing much so far except for a small light anomaly in one of the bedrooms. Doesn't look like any bug or dust particle, so it's possible that it could be a manifestation of a spirit."

Vaughn smirked. "Nice try. But I wasn't referring to the videos." He rested his elbows on his knees, his mug cradled between his hands. "I'm talking about you and Alex. Heard you both chatting it up a while ago...." He eyed me expectantly to fill him in.

"Huh. That's why it grew quiet all of a sudden."

"Don't give me that shit now, dude."

I rolled my eyes at him and twisted my mug around my fingertips, feeling the heat scorch my skin. "She just thought she blacked out. From what I observed, somehow her subconscious mind is projecting an obstruction around her pineal gland, making her unaware of her empathic ability." I explained.

"Like some sort of shield." He pondered on that for a while. "Maybe you should let her know."

"I'm not sure I'm the right person to tell her, and I doubt she'll ever believe me." My thoughts wandered to Alex's aunt. I was pretty sure she was aware to her niece's spiritual strength and higher level of consciousness.

Vaughn glanced around. "Where she at?"

"Taking a call at the balcony. Why?" I asked casually.

"Well, I'm just wondering on what you guys planned on doing about this current...mess." He asked quietly, as though not wanting to be overheard. He was the only person I confided to about this whole situation concerning Alex.

I rubbed my eyes; strained from the lack of sleep. "I told her that we would need to talk to her aunt about it. As far as I'm aware, I'm as well kept in the dark by my father as she is with her aunt. Since both of them were friends, I'm sure her aunt has a clearer picture on what the hell we're dealing with." Especially the involvement of something oppressive and evil, but I didn't need to point that out loud.

"Did your dad ever hinted on who or what wants to harm Alex?"

I placed my elbows on the arms of the chair and steepled my fingers. I remembered on how my dad had an urgent call that personally affected him until his dying day. "I've told you; during those times I was listening with half an ear. I thought this was just one of his usual cases, a haunted residence or something. But that was before he told me he was asked to actually follow someone. What he only told me was that her aunt had some kind of-vision, which gave her some kind of warning that her niece is in grave danger. And that's why she contacted dad; to keep an eye on Alex while she finds answers, whatever that means."
