Chapter 15: Lighter

"Join me for dinner tonight?" Draco asked, we still hadn't moved. We just laying there, not addressing the position we were currently in.

"Christmas dinner, with you, tonight? hum, I'll have to check my calendar" I giggled.

"Alright cheeky" he nudged me. An owl tapped on the window. I groaned as he climbed out of the bed. "miss me already, Granger" he laughed as he unlatched the window.

"shove off Malfoy" I turned over in the sheets.

"it's for you" he handed me the note and then sat beside me.

"it's from Ginny" I sat up and opened it.

Mione,

I know you probably want to be left alone but Harry and I will be in Hogwarts at 11am if you would please come and see us. We love you; I promise you don't need to hide from us.

Gin

"Harry and Ginny are coming" I sighed, tilting my head back.

"do you want to see them?" he asked.

"it's not their fault, so, yes, I guess I do" I swung my legs out of the bed until our legs were brushing off one another's "will you be there?"

"do you want me to be there?" he asked looking down on me. I just nodded. "then of course, I'll be there". I leaned my head on his shoulder, trying to summon the strength to face the day.

I slipped into a pair of dark jeans and my Gryffindor jumper. I waved my wand to tame my curly hair. I didn't bother covering the scar. It could stay. When I went back into the sitting area Draco was waiting. "you look much better" he said "your eyes don't look as dark"

"I would say I'm feeling a bit better, but I fear that would inflate your ego too much"

"you are such a brat" he laughed "we better go". I nodded taking a deep breath. He put a hand on the doorknob and waited for me to join him. The white t long sleeved top he was wearing showed how much colour he gained. "one word and we're out of there, agreed?"

"agreed"

We descended the steps of the main hall. The buzz of Christmas day was around us. A small number of students running left to right exchanging gifts. The clock chimed eleven. I realised I was hungry, we hadn't eaten. I realised that was because I had slept. Draco hadn't said anything, he just walked beside me. In case I needed him. Ginny and Harry stood outside the Great Hall. "Hermione" Ginny said, she came towards me but stopped when she realised that he was walking with me.

"Hi" I cleared my throat.

"we're so sorry Mione" Harry began.

"you didn't do anything Harry"

"he went off the rails, he was out of line" he shook his head "we should have done something sooner"

"just leave it" I said.

"are you okay?" Ginny asked, looking to Malfoy.

"he won't bite" I said, I swore I heard Draco hold back a chuckle.

"just something much worse" Ginny started.

"Ginny" Harry warned, "go wait by the fireplace". She looked to me and reached out a hand. I squeezed it.

"see you when you get back" I said as she walked away, not forgetting to scowl at Malfoy before she did. Harry walked to me, opening his arms. I walked into him tucking my head into his neck.

"I'm here for you Mione, you know that" he said into my hair "we've just been to Godric's Hollow, I prayed for you in the church. I don't know how to pray" I laughed as I pulled back swallowing the tears. "Molly's terribly upset with him, as you can imagine. He got your letter, he doesn't except it, but he read it."

"tell him he doesn't have a choice" I whimpered. He nodded. Harry turned to Malfoy.

"look after her, you owe us that much. Look after her or I'll kill you". Draco stepped forward, so close I could feel the warmth radiating from him.

"with everything I'm worth" he announced. I tried not to smile. Harry winked before ducking into the Hall to go. "how do you feel?"

"lighter" I whispered, I turned to him. "I have some things I need to do"

"okay" Draco nodded "Dinner is at 7, don't be late"
