Bandit (Max x Evie - What happened after Supernova)

Chapter five ~ Evie

Magpie pulled up her leggings and shrugged on a hoodie, ah, her comfortable clothes, definitely better than the tight fitting, sticks to your skin, Renegades uniform, she brushed her bob of black hair and adjusted her glasses, eh, who cares about looks when you're going to be spending 24 hours in the same place, comfort before beauty was always her motto, she slipped on her Renegade-issued band and tapped on the location message from Adrian, or Sketch, she walked out of the orphanage she lived in and jumped in a cab, watching the building get smaller in the distance, she was made to return all of her 'collection' by the Nurse last week, throwing away years of stolen goods, they were almost as much for her to buy her own apartment, she balled her hand into a fist and cursed, looking at the bruised knuckles from colliding with Max's jaw yesterday, she still hadn't seen the boy, and now here she was, going to spend 24 hours with him, god, what was she doing?

Magpie sat in the corner of the room, surveying the people around her, no one had even bothered to greet her, they were all either caught up with trying to figure out who the Malefactor was or just blatantly rude, like Max, who was sat on the opposite side of the room, playing some sort of card game with Jade and Sterling, every once in a while laughter came from their corner, startling everyone including herself, she looked over Oscar's shoulder to try and see what him and the rest of the 'adults' were looking at "Lien Waters, superpower, able to show someone a vision or an image, could she be the Malefactor? Adrian shook his head "Detained a month ago" Ruby sighed and drew a line through the name "So we have no idea who they are" Adrian shook his head and looked at the notebook "Nope" he sighed and glanced out the window "But isn't that what we're here for?" Magpie butted in and they all looked at her, not even realising that she was listening, finally Oscar answered "Yes I suppose, but it's always nice to know who you're dealing with" Magpie shrugged and she butted into the circle "True, but if you have a list of criminals shouldn't it be updated?" Adrian chuckled even though Magpie didn't know what was funny "For that, I would have to sneak into my dad's office, and I don't really want to break their trust again" he looked at Nova who glanced away from the binoculars for a second to give him a small smile. Magpie rolled her eyes "Boringggg" Ruby laughed and patted Magpie's shoulder "Now I see why everyone calls you Nova 2.0" the earned her a glare from both girls, she put her hands up in mock defeat "Sorry, just trying to clear the air between you two" Magpie stood up "I'd rather hang out with Phobia than be compared to her" she stormed back to her corner and sat down in a huff, Max looked over at her and she met his gaze, he eventually looked away and back at his card game. Magpie brought out her book and buried herself in another world, ignoring the harsh reality of the one she lived in.

Night fell and it was time for Jade and Sterling's watch, meaning that Max walked over and sat next to her, Magpie looked up from her book, irritated "What do you want" Max scoffed and shook his head "Hello to you too" she rolled her eyes and marked her place, setting the book down "If you expect an apology you're not getting one" Max drew his legs up to his chest "No I was actually going to apologise to you, you were right, I cheated and it wasn't fair" Magpie took a double take and looked at him, he was apologising?? And he even looked like he meant it? She shook her head, this boy always shocked her "Well apology accepted" she gave him a tight lipped smile and he grinned, holding out his hand "Let's try this again shall we? Max Everhart" she regarded his hand before taking it "Margaret White, but call me Margaret and I'll do worse than ruin your pretty face" Max laughed and pulled his hand away after shaking it "Noted" he smiled and looked around the room, most people were asleep or talking in hushed voices, Evie checked her watch 12am, she stifled a yawn and looked over at Nova who stood up and put her hands on Jade and Sterling's shoulders "I'll take it from here" the twins nodded and they curled up on a mat, Nova looked back at Max and Magpie "You two should sleep as well" Magpie looked around the room, she absolutely hated the idea of people watching her sleep, but that's what came with living in an orphanage, she lay down and took off her glasses, neatly folding them and putting them next to Adrian's where they wouldn't be stepped on, she closed her eyes and heard Max lay down next to her, she opened her eyes and looked at him, he lay on his back with his arms behind his head, his t-shirt lifted slightly and showed his midriff, obviously too small for his yearly growth spurt, she met his eyes "Do you think we'll catch them?" The question caught her off guard, he looked as if he almost doubted himself and the teams' abilities "Of course we'll catch them" Magpie replied, not believing it but not wanting to see him so down, so unconfident in the people he looked up to. Max nodded "Of course we will, silly question" Max sighed and closed his eyes, taking that as the conversation was over, Magpie rolled over onto her side and closed her eyes, Max's doubts whirling in her mind.
