Chapter twenty two ~ Max

Max groaned and tried to lift his hand to hold his thumping head, but his hands smacked down onto a hard metal surface, Max stared at them and once his eyes adjusted he found that he was bound to what looked like a veterinary table, he cried out and threw himself at the bounds, but it only resulted in the cuffs chafing his skin he groaned and smacked his head on the metal table in frustration, he heard a soft whimper from the corner and he looked up, his eyes adjusted to the harsh white light and he saw what appeared to look like a shadow in the corner, the shadow was small, wearing a dress, staring at him from the darkness "Evie?" He asked, his voice quiet and laced with disbelief, Evie stepped out of the shadow, she had mascara running down her face along with tears, her bottom lip was chapped and bleeding, her dress ripped at the hem. She stepped towards him and a women blocked her path, holding a knife to her throat, Max gritted his teeth "Jackknife" he spat and she laughed, tilting Evie's chin up with the knife "You've really filled out haven't you Everhart? Don't you agree Evie?" Evie whimpered and Max once again threw himself against the restraints "You leave her alone" Jackknife laughed "How adorable, you Everhearts always fall for the ones that will betray you" she spat out the last two words. Max looked at Evie but she wouldn't meet his eyes, her whole body trembling, despite his jacket, still hanging from her shoulders. A loud laugh caught Max's attention and he turned his head just in time to see a man dressed in a black suit and an animal mask step into the light, he clapped gloved hands together "Oh what a show, two teenage lovers, thrown apart by an act of betrayal. I'm almost sad that we'll never get to see the ending" he held up a knife and Evie screamed Max's name, but her screams were cut off by Jackknife's hand. The man, in which Max assumed was the Malefactor turned towards Evie, Max could almost sense a sinister smile beneath the mask "I may be a villain but I keep my promises, let her go Jackknife" Jackknife rolled her eyes and stepped away from Evie, Evie rubbed her throat where Jackknife's dagger had nicked her. The Malefactor put the knife down on a metal table next to Max's head and smirked "And not a word to the Renegades, do you understand?" Evie nodded and Jackknife suddenly ripped the skirt of Evie's dress with her dagger, Evie screamed and Jackknife punched her in the jaw, Max shouted in protest and the Malefactor laughed "Now now Bandit" he put a hand on Max's shoulder and Max turned his head and snapped his teeth at the Malefactor's hand, he raised it from his shoulder and laced it with his other hand. "No need to get testy" he said with a smug voice "We are just helping Ms Artino with her cover story, make it seem more... what's the word?" He drummed his fingers on the metal table near Max's head "Viable" Evie muttered, rubbing her jaw. The Malfactor snapped his fingers, causing Max to jump "That's it! Now Jackknife, please escort Ms Artino out, I have up tend... to our guest" he turned towards Max and blocked his view of Evie. Max watched him set up what looked like a massive rubber pipe "Contrary to many beliefs Max, I do not want to hurt you" Max narrowed his eyes and surveyed the basement properly, it seemed like they were in a factory of some sort, his eyes immediately went to his wrist but his Renegades issued wristband was gone. The Malefactor tutted "You really think I'm that stupid Max?" He held up a scalpel and inspected it in the light "Unlike Ace Anarchy I do not brag about my powers" Max scoffed causing the Malefactor to look up from his work "Yet you both relied on a innocent girl to do your dirty work" the Malefactor laughed and put a gloved hand on Max's arm "But it worked didn't it" he said before raising his head causing Max to quickly turn look in the direction the Malefactor was looking, another criminal, Lein Waters, otherwise known as Illusion, stepped forward with a smirk "Do you need assistance sir?" She asked, the Malefactor nodded "Distract him will you?" She smirked and rubbed her hands together, walking towards Max "Of course sir" suddenly her hands went to his temples, before Max could pull away his vision was flooded with images of Evie, she was standing in a golden cornfield in a long white dress, her hand beckoning him towards her, he obeyed and she took his hands, looking at him like she always did, like he was the only person in the world, she reached up and her fingers touched his face "I love you" Max felt a sharp pain in his left arm and the vision faded, before he knew what was happening the rubber tube was being shoved up his arm, he screamed out in pain, agony rose through his chest as his body was set into panic mode, he willed himself to stay awake. "It's no use Max, give in" he heard the Malefactor say before his eyes slammed shut and his head hit the metal table, and his vision went black.
