Chapter thirteen ~ Evie

The Malefactor prowled around her, she was back in the basement, tied to the chair, she struggled against it and frantically looked around, wondering how she got there, the Malefactor laughed, it echoed around her "Little old Magpie, not even strong enough to face her past" he laughed again and Jackknife held a dagger to her throat, Magpie tried to protest but a gag appeared in her mouth, she jumped how the hell did that happen, her eyes widened, it was a dream. "Smart one you are, but no, this is not a dream, well, not the ones that you know of" Jackknife smirked and put more pressure on the knife, drawing blood, Magpie screamed and she willed herself to wake up come on come on come on the Malefactor leaned forward, so close she could see his eyes through the mask, they were a dark green, almost dark enough to be black "Wake up" his voice sounded like Nova's and Magpie jumped. She opened her eyes to see Nova standing over her, she felt the pressure of an arm over her waist and she glanced back to see that it was Max, holding her tightly even in sleep "Try and escape him, we need to talk" Nova whispered before walking out of the room, Magpie frowned and she gently lifted Max's arm, he sighed and rolled over onto his side, away from her, she pulled on his hoodie and slowly walked into the main room of the apartment, looking around to see if she could spot Nova "Up here" she looked at the window just in time to see Nova climb onto the roof, Magpie put her feet in someone's boots and pulled herself out the window and up onto the roof, shivering at the cold night, Nova looked back at her, she had the hood of her hoodie up, she looked more like Nightmare than she had done in years "You are exactly like I imagined her to be" She said so quietly that Magpie almost couldn't hear her over the howling wind, Nova sat down on the edge of the roof and Magpie joined her, wrapping Max's hoodie around her, shivering "The funny thing is, I believe them" Magpie looked at Nova "Really?" Nova nodded and sighed, dangling her legs over the edge of the roof "That bullet I found in your pocket ages ago, do you still have it?" Magpie nodded and she reached around her neck and pulled it a small leather pouch, taking it off and opening it, taking the bullet out and putting it in Nova's outstretched hand, Nova studied it and smiled slightly "This is exactly the same type of bullet Ace's croony used to kill my parents... and my sister" she handed the bullet back to Magpie who put it back in the pouch and strung it around her neck. "The nurse at the orphanage said she found me, clutching a bullet in my fist and wailing like there was no tomorrow" she chuckled slightly "My powers of metal detection saved me" she looked at her hand, she could still see the scar from where she had caught the bullet. She saw Nova shake her head from the corner of her eye "Uncle Alec- Ace, he- he said you were dead" Magpie looked at the city and the Renegades building in the distance "So did Hugh Everhart" she muttered, and Nova chuckled "It wouldn't be the first mistake he has made" Magpie turned to look at Nova, her sister, the person she had wanted to find ever since she knew she had one. Nova smiled slightly "Look I know we're not the best of friends but maybe- maybe we could try and get along?" Magpie nodded and she held out her hand for Nova to shake "I'll have to get used to being called Evie first but sure" Nova smirked and shook Evie's hand "Nice to meet you sister" Much to Evie's surprise, she pulled her into a hug that she gingerly returned, patting Nova's back lightly Jesus, things were about to get a lot more complicated for her.
