We got off the boat and waited for a car to come and pick us up from the docks. I was happy to be here but I couldn't tell if Althea felt the same.

She hadn't spoken a word to me. Not since we almost kissed and it bothered me. It bothered me a lot! Did my breath smell bad or something?!

Oh gosh.

"The car's here..." I stated. She looked up at me and turned away.

"Althea, what's going on with you? Have I done something wrong? You've been ignoring me..." I asked, not liking the distance.

"No, nothings wrong..." she answered.

"Then talk to me, please I—"

"The car is waiting." With her arms folded, she made her way towards the car and I followed.

She sat down and moved to the far side; putting her seatbelt on. I sighed and got in beside her.

The driver drove off and we were engulfed in a complete silence. The tension was so thick, you could cut it with a knife. I hated not talking to her but she didn't want to hear it. What could I do?

"Evan?" She whispered.

I could hear her heart beating quickly. Was she anxious to talk to me? Had I scared her?

I turned to her, glancing at the interior mirror, meeting eyes with the driver. I glared at him and he looked away.

'Bástardos'

(Bastard)

How dare he make her uncomfortable. I focused my attention on Althea whose heart was pounding out of her chest.

"What's wrong?" I whispered to her.

I put up the black divider between the driver and the two of us so we could have a bit more privacy.

"I'm scared..." she whispered.

"What? Why? There's nothing to be afraid of, we're here, together and away from everything—" I explained, trying to soothe her.

"I have this fear that they're going to find us again. It's a nagging feeling and it won't go away..."

I took off my seatbelt and moved to the seat that was in the middle. I grabbed her hand, putting it on my thigh. Her heart beat kept going faster.

"It's gonna be okay..." I said stroking the back of her hand, "Den tha afíso kanénan na se pligósei..."

(I will not let anyone hurt you)

"You keep saying that but how do you know that we won't get separated. You can't be with me all the time—"

"Let me worry about that Althea, please calm down," I leaned closer to her ear, "I can hear your heart beating very quickly..." I moved away from her and she gave me an embarrassed smile.

I smiled back at her and put my seatbelt on, not letting go of her hand. I'm going to do everything in my power to keep this girl safe. Even if it kills me.

The car came to a stop.

"Uh sir, we're here!" The diver announced.

We got out of the car and waited for him to drive off before going inside.

I used the key we were given and unlocked the door, letting Althea go inside first.

Locking the door behind me, I turned around to see she was still stood behind me.

"It's pretty late, how about we get a snack and go outside before we go to bed huh?" I asked, hoping to calm her down.

"Yeah okay!" She smiled. I followed her into the kitchen and watched as she grabbed the ice cream from the freezer and I grabbed two spoons.

We headed out into the garden and sat on the grass.

The sun was just setting and the moon was already in the sky.

Althea rested her head on my shoulder as we ate the ice cream.

"You never did tell me why you decided to run away with me..." she spoke up...

"Oh, well. My father, he's the alpha. I have an older sister, Rhea. She and my mother both ran away and left us. I sometimes wonder why my mother didn't take me with them but I guess it was because I was pretty young." I shrugged.

She listened intently, "My father took it very hard. He lost his mate and his daughter—"

"What's a mate?" She asked.

It was my turn for my heart to jump out of my chest, "Well, like zoí, we have a God, more a Goddess. She carefully selects her children's mates. A mate is a life partner. You love and cherish them forever. But it's not forced. You can choose to reject your mate. Although that never really happens, the goddess would chose a second chance mate for the both of you..." I answered, "The love between mates is genuine. Nothing can destroy it..."

"Wow, I'd love to have a mate. It sounds wonderful. No one is forcing you either. Your goddess is amazing." She mumbled. This gave me hope. She wouldn't be angry about being my mate.

"It's rare but possible for zoí to be mated to wolves. I've never seen it before though..." I continued. She hummed.

"Okay so they left and it was just my father and I. Losing his mate turned him cold. My mother hadn't rejected him and she wasn't dead so he didn't go insane. He just lost his other half. He wanted me to be the alpha when he stepped down."

"Isn't that a good thing?" She pondered.

"If I was the first born child, I wouldn't object. But I'm not. The title belongs to Rhea. There are stories of wolves who forced being the alpha. The Goddess punished them terribly for it. The alpha must be the first born child. They were born leaders of their pack. It's how it should be but my father wouldn't listen."

"I understand that..." she scoffed.

I smiled, "His beta, or second in command, should've become alpha and his family would lead the pack but my father is desperate to keep the pack in our bloodline..."

She sighed, "I know all about bloodline thirst. My father also has a strong case of it. My older brother, Adrian, he's come of age and has a child on the way. He's a noble already. My father won't leave it there. He's desperate for me to be one too. I don't want that..." she explained.

"What do you want Althea?"
