11 – Victory of the Rice Paddy

The library of Fuyumi Highschool was located toward the south side. Boasting a large collection of both old and modern Japanese literature, as well as translated and non-translated foreign texts.

It was just about the size of the assembly hall, including a second floor which allowed students a more comfortable study area if they were alone, while the main tables on the first floor had to be booked in advance. Despite the chairs, tables and chairs being taken from another school entirely, they had been well cared for. Even the most studious of students would find themselves distracted by their own reflection in the brown polished surfaces.

At the centre of the library was the main desk where the sole guardian of all its tomes resided playing solitaire on a large desktop computer that kept her small frame from sight. She wore black tapered trousers and cream long-sleeve blouse; large bottlecap glasses with thick lenses which kept slipping down her nose. Her mint green hair was neatly tied back into a bun with a fountain pen stuck through it.

One of the double doors was slowly pulled open; from behind it the heads of Yume and Taichi peered inside.

"You sure she said the library?" Yume whispered.

"I'm sure" Taichi responded condescendingly "An- Miss Tokura said we'd find him in the library, mention 'The Prof' and they'll hear us out... I guess?"

"Well" Yume took a deep breath and slipped under Taichi and marched over to the main desk.

She cleared her throat.

The librarian continued clicking away.

"Ahem!" she repeated louder.

Still no response.

Yume turned to Taichi for aid. He shrugged closing the door behind him quietly. She looked around for something to help her get the librarians attention.

Her gaze fell upon a stack of books, neatly stacked waiting to be returned to their rightful place on the shelves. She pondered for a moment, and then a mischievous smile grew across her face. She turned and stretched wide faking a yawn; leaning back onto the counter her elbow pushed the books over.

"Oh woops" Yume exclaimed animatedly "I'm so sorry"

The librarian shot up out of her chair and hurried over to the books.

"Ah lemme help you with those" Yume crouched down to face the librarian who lifted her head quickly with a stiff expression, "eep!"

She stared at Yume for a moment, as if she were a computer herself processing the information in front of her. without changing her face, she said "Thank you for your help."

"Ahaha... no problem..." she started to gather some of the books, holding them to her chest.  "So, while I've got you here, would you know anything about a teacher who hangs around here?"

The librarian didn't look up, "Many teachers come here to prepare resources from time to time, could you be more specific?"

"One that doesn't advise a club, we were told to mention 'The Prof' if that helps?"

The librarian froze for a moment, again processing information. Finally, the stony aspects of her character dropped as her shoulders lowered and she let out a long-exasperated groan. "So, Tokura sent you? Does she need me to cover another class for her?"

"Huh? Well no not exactly. Do you know where we can find the teacher we're looking for?"

The librarian stood up and took the books from Yume; setting them back down on her desk she reached behind and placed a small sign that read "On Break" on top of the counter. "It's a little complicated, so please follow me."
