However helpful it may be
To hear stories of the gods
To grasp, without words,
The essence of the Tao,
To meditate on Buddha-mind,
To pray to Allah,
To be one with the Great Spirit,
None of this will save me
Until I learn to see
Past story-telling,
Past grasping,
Past meditation,
Past prayer,
Past union.
None of this will save me
Until I stop worshiping the signposts
And walk the path
They're meant to
Guide me to.
