The Assignment
7:00 A.M
Luke's POV:
We all enter the auditorium. They told us that the class was going to be here, but now I understand why. For this exercise, we got combined with the other class. I sit next to Mia, Anja, and Leo in the 3rd row.
"Awkward..." Mia whispers to me.
I wonder why, until she points her finger towards our parents staring at us.
"Yeah, no kidding." I say back.
I see her playing with her necklace.
"That's a nice necklace," I say.
"Thanks."
I wonder about who is going first. After 5 minutes, kids from the other class go first. This was going to take a while, since there was going to be a total of 55 interrogations. I leaned back. I wondered what Mia had found on me. I never really thought about it; I was too busy working on my assignment to think of it.
After about an hour, our class finally had started. Anja and Leo had went first. Their secrets weren't too bad. They were just some embarrassing things they did as 5 year olds. Then, it was our turn. Mia got to ask the questions first. We put a polygraph on our fingers so we could tell if we were telling the truth or not.
"So, are you Ryan and Shelby's son?"
"Yes."
"Are you an only child?"
"Yes."
The polygraph beeped.
"You have a brother. Or should I say had? He died 4 years ago. Adam had leukemia and was being treated for it at Children's Hospital of LA. A shootout happened and he was one of the 2 people who got shot. The gunshot wound plus leukemia caused his death. Yes or no?"
I gulped at the memory of it.
"Yes." I think my voice cracked when I said it, but no one seemed to notice.
"You are correct, Mia." Owen said.
Mia and I switched places.
Mia's POV:
I felt kind of guilty for just saying it straightforward and not taking it easy on him, but I can't do anything right now. I really felt like playing with my necklace, but my hands had the polygraph on it. Luke starts asking questions.
"Is your name Mia Parrish?"
Someone in the audience says, "What kind of question is that?"
I see a surprised look on Anja's face.
"Well, I could lie and say it is, but both of us know that it isn't true. So no." I say.
Everyone in the auditorium looks shocked.
I try to pull a straight face, but then the tough questions come.
"Is your last name McQuigg?"
"Yes."
"Why did you lie about it?"
"That's not a yes or no question."
"Was it your father's last name?"
"Smart move, Luke." I think.
"Yes."
"Have you ever met him?"
"You've seen the pictures. You know that the answer is yes."
"He was a rogue agent for the FBI who disappeared 2 years ago. Neither you or your mom has had contact with him in 2 years."
"Yes."
"That is correct, Luke." Owen says.
The cameras and microphones turn off. While we are leaving the room, Luke says, "Mia, wait!"
I quickly run ahead of him and go back into the auditorium. I take my seat next to Anja.
"Hey, you ok?" she asks.
"I don't want to talk about it."
Luke takes a seat next to me.
"Mia......."
I ignore him and ask Anja to switch seats with her. She agrees. We spend the next 45 minutes listening to everybody else. After it's over, I go straight to my room. I see that it's 9 and tha t we have 1 hour before PT. Anja goes into Danity's room, so I could have some quiet. I grab my phone. I unlock it and just stare at my Home Screen. A picture of me and Dad. I start crying just staring at the picture.
Alex's POV:
When I heard Luke's secret, I was shocked. Once everyone leaves, I walk towards Shelby. This was what I get for not talking to my best friend for almost 12 years.
"Shelby, why did you not tell me?" I ask.
"You and Mike were busy with Mia; we hadn't talked in almost 8 years. Plus, I didn't want to bring back your memories of the miscarriage you had by telling you."
"I got over it, Shelby. I feel like a terrible friend. For 3 weeks after I had lost the baby, you were not leaving my side. Now when you lost Adam, I was across the country. I feel awful."
"Alex, it doesn't matter anymore. Don't get yourself worked up over this. I am just glad I got my best friend back."
I give Shelby a big hug.
"Promise me that we won't keep secrets like that anymore." I say.
"Only if you promise not to run away anymore."
I give a small laugh and we give each other another hug.
All of the other instructors walk over. Nimah comes and joins our hug.
"It looks like it's the Power Puff Girls reunion."Nimah says.
"Glad us boys don't get all soapy over these kind of things." Caleb says.
"I wouldn't say that. I have seen Mike get emotional after the last episode of Liv and Maddie." I say. I smile to myself remembering when Mia would watch it, and Mike would tear up.
"Well maybe it was an emotional show." Ryan defends.
"It's a show that Mia watched when she was 8 and she did not get emotional." I say back.
I see the look on their faces change. Shelby and I laugh.
"I am going to go check on Mia." I say.
They nod and say bye. I walk towards Mia's room. I can hear sniffles from the door. I knock and I hear her say, "Come in."
I see that she has her phone on and I also take a look at what she is looking at. A picture of her and Mike.
"Come here sweetie." I say. She rests her head on my shoulder, while I give her a hug.
"I miss him." she says.
"Me too."
I just hold on to her for another minute.
"I have to go. Are you going to be ok?" I ask.
She nod and I give her a kiss in the top of her head. We say bye, and I head towards Owen's room so we can discuss the Junior Agents course.
