When Thomas showed up, everyone naturally showed him around, gave him rules, everything he would need to survive. Thomas hadn't failed to notice you and Newt's close relationship, and asked Newt who you were, what you did, etc. Newt made sure to throw in your relationship just to make sure Thomas would back off.
