In 2012, Bighit released a statement stating a new group was currently being formed and was about to debut. It wasn't until a few weeks later Bighit specified that it would be a Coed Kpop group that would be debuting in 2013. The public at first didn't care since Coed groups in Kpop have happened in the past but weren't very successful, only lasting about a year before having to disband.
It wasn't until Bighit released the member lineup that started grabbing people's attention, and not in a good way. Most people thought that having one girl in an eight-member band that consist of all guys was a stupid idea and a lot of people expressed their opinions on social media.
