(Angst (?) warning)
Working, working, he was always working. He's married to his work, not to me. Y/n clenched her hands. She wished she was married to him. The girl looked poorly at her hand, a ring there from him, without him really there. It was a promise. A promise he made of their future together. But he seemed not to be a part of it anymore.
Henry had hardly ever returned her letters anymore, and hardly came by her household. Then, when she went to visit, it was the same decline for the same reason: "He's working, miss." Poole sensed the disappointment from her each time he turned her away.
Now that she thought of it, she hadn't seen him at all in a couple of months. Her fiance had been so indulged in work that he inevitably pushed everyone away that could separate him from it.
"Why must I chase after him anymore?"
Y/n's heart seemed to spin in confusion. It couldn't take much more.
"His promise, it's...gone. Blown to the wind." She shook her head, then placed her hand on her forehead in defeat. "I must see him."
~~~
With only a cape, she hurried along down Henry's street, and practically flew up the stairs and pounded on the door. Poole answered.
"Ms.L/n?, why, its nearly midnight!" "I know, Poole, please forgive me, but it's urgent. I must see your master."
Poole's expression turned to one of defeat. "I'm sorry, my dear, but, Doctor Jekyll is working, and wishes not to be dis-"
"Please, Poole!" She clasped her hands together, pleading. "I must! This...this will be my last visit. "
Poole seemed to understand what that meant. He stepped aside without a word. "Oh, thank you, Poole!" Y/n grabbed her dress and rushed down the stairs where the laboratory was. The metal doors flew open ad Y/n entered.
She saw all around various equipment, beakers and glasses, package hay all over the floor, hundreds of papers scattered in all sorts of places around the room. And there he was, writing away. He looked a mess. Y/n felt a twinge of sorrow at the sight.
He didn't notice her. He didn't hear the doors open at all. Y/n cleared her throat.
"Y/n!" Henry exclaimed, looking up from his papers and standing up. "It's rather late, isn't it...? What brings you here?" He stepped out from his desk and made way towards her. "It's urgent. I had to-" "Can this perhaps, wait...?" Y/n went still.
"What do you ever mean?" She inquired. "I hate to say this, but, I am in the middle of something very, very important." He lay a finger on the papers on his desk. "But...its urgent, I said!" "Can you make it quick?" Henry asked with slight annoyance.
She couldn't believe this. "No. This isn't just something I cant make quick. We...we aren't working, Henry." He suddenly lifted his head at her, there was alarm in his gaze. "What are you saying?" "We aren't working, Henry! This has consumed you! You...you've changed. You made a promise to me! Your work it's...posionous." She spilled the words out.
"You think my work is posion?" Henry slightly laughed. "Y/n, my dear, this...this work I do, it's very important to our research, to the growing scientific world! I thought you understood that."
"I understood you worked hard, not to the point that you don't appear for months. How will we ever plan our wedding?"
"That can wait. I must focus on this. What I'm doing here...I'm so close to something groundbreaking, I know it." She hardly believed he just said that. "How could you say that?"
"Y/n, there are more important things at stake." He sat back down at his desk. She was at her limit. "Henry..." The tears were falling now. Henry noticed and was shocked. "Y/n, wait, I-"
"No! It's clear you have a higher priority. I...I release you, Henry." Y/n took the ring off her finger, and placed it on the desk. Henry stared at her and the ring in disbelief. She turned away, retreating back up the stairs, gently closing the laboratory doors.
Henry sat there, sorrow soon taking over him after realizing too late what he had done. He picked up the ring, remembering when he first gave it to her and the promising words he did indeed tell her. Where was that promise now? He leaned back, covering his eyes and wept silenty, still holding the ring. He'd lost her.
Y/n, clutching her dress, ran out the door and down the sidewalk to her household, tears streaming and flying off her cheeks.
Y/n loved Henry, even after all that she still loved him more than words could tell, but she knew if she had stayed it only would've hurt more.
(A/n)
So this was sort of based off that scene in A Christmas Carol where Belle (that's her name i think?) Leaves Scrooge because his love for her was overcome by his love of money. In this case, Henry's obsession with his work overcame his love and his promise to Y/n. Very sad scenario. This was my first time writing a very sad centered one-shot, I dont know if it clarifies as Angst but its certainly not happy
