Yn's POV

After last week's mass casualty situation, Ms. Goodwin allowed me to take a week off to gather myself, and it worked. I was feeling a lot better after getting a break from work. But now I was back, and I was ready to get my life back to normal.

"Tracy Herman, 25-year-old female. 21 weeks pregnant. GCS, 14, dyspneic. This is her mother, Pam," the paramedic told me.

"Is my baby okay?" Tracy asked.

"Tracy, I'm Dr. Ln. Can you tell me what happened?" I question.

"We were having breakfast and she just collapsed," the mom answered.

"All right, let's transfer her and put her on the monitors. On my count, ready, one, two, three." On my count, we transferred Tracy to the ED bed. "Any pain or discomfort?"

"No," Tracy replied as I listened to her heart.

"Breath sounds are clear and present bilaterally, but I am hearing a systolic murmur. It's probably the pregnancy putting a strain on your heart. Have you had any bleeding?" I quiz.

"Uh, just some spotting, but my OB said it's normal," Tracy disclosed.

"It can be. Doris, let's get a fetal ultrasound, chest X-ray, and call up to Cardiology for an ECHO," I order. "Tracy, just try to relax. We're going to do everything we can to figure this out."

"Hey," I greet and give Will a kiss. "How was the game against Jay?"

"I'm filing a protest with the league commissioner," Will joked.

"So you lost?" I ask. Will nodded, and I laughed.

"Yn? Imaging results from your pregnant patient in Treatment Four," Maggie said and handed me a tablet. Will looked over my shoulder at the scans, and I'm guessing he saw the same thing as me.

"You should page CT surgery," Will suggested.

"Yeah. I'll see you later," I exclaim and peck his cheek. As soon as Connor and Ava came down to the ED, I told them about my case, and then we went to talk to Tracy.

"You're saying I have damage to my heart?" Tracy questioned.

"To be specific, it's your mitrovalve. When it's not functioning properly, the body doesn't get enough oxygen, which is why you've been feeling so weak and short of breath. In all likelihood, Tracy was born with a defect, and it just didn't show any symptoms until now. The baby has apparently added strain to your heart, which has caused it to present itself. You'll need surgery to replace the defective valve, but there are some potential complications," Connor explained.

"Complications?" Tracy asked.

"Due to your pregnancy, the medication needed to conduct the surgery could cause a life threatening vaginal bleed, and given that your fetus hasn't reached viability, we think it's best for your health if you terminate before undergoing surgery," Ava informed Tracy and her mother.

"What? No. You don't understand. My husband, Roy, we lost him in a car accident three months ago. We had just got the news that I was pregnant. He was so excited. He wanted this so bad," Tracy claimed.

"Tracy, without this surgery, neither you nor your baby will survive," I confess.

"No!" Tracy argued. "This baby is all I have left. I won't let you take it from me."

........................................

"They taking her up to surgery?" Will asked and nodded to Tracy, who was being transported away on a gurney.

"Yeah. I'm worried about her. Connor's taking a big risk. But all I can do is wait," I say.

Will put an arm around me and pulled me to his side. "I'm sure she's going to be fine. Connor's the best." A bit later, I heard that Connor was done with the surgery, so I headed up to see how things went.

"Hey. How'd the surgery go?" I question.

"Good. Tracy's heart is functioning well," Connor replied.

"And the baby?" I quiz.

"Alive and healthy," Connor responded.

I smiled and hugged him tightly. "Thanks, Connor."

"It wasn't a big deal. Look, I've got another surgery to do, so I will talk to you later," Connor exclaimed. However, things did not get as good as I'd hoped. That day, Tracy ended up dying. Apparently something was wrong with the valve Connor and Ava put in. That night, once shift had ended, I met up with Will in the lounge. I climbed onto the couch next to him and snuggled into his side.

"I'm in the mood to just get home and climb into bed. What do you say?" I ask.

Will smiled. "Sounds like a plan. But there is one thing I have to do first."

"All right," I mumble and stand up. "Just try to be quick. You know I can't sleep well without you next to me."
