Katsumi POV-
Everything seemed just fine- sort of. I mean, Snowy was kind of acting different for some reason, and as you know, my parents were splitting up. Other than that, everything was normal, everything had a rhythm.
I can't say I was too surprised when it all got disrupted.
"What do you mean they need EVERY hero in the area working for this mission?"
"I have no idea. Elvis told me that his dads told him and then I saw it on the news and-"
"Ohhhhh my fucking god." I paced back and fourth, running my fingers through my hair. "This can't be real."
"Katsumi, I'm scared."
I stopped in my tracks and lowered my hands. I knew I wouldn't be seeing my parents for a while, shit, I probably won't be seeing an actual adult that isn't a total stranger to me for a while. That meant I had to take charge. I had to be her rock for the time being. "It's gonna be fine. Our dads are super powerful, so are a lot of the heroes around here. They'll be fine."
"But you know dad's been getting weaker, you've seen the way he's been looking lately!"
"Hey, listen to me, kid. Everything will be fine. Trust me. They'll be fine, and we'll be fine, I'll make sure of it." I put my hand on her shoulder and smiled. Truth be told, I was just as scared. With all the heroes off doing something else, that left all the city watching to students, vigilantes, and whatever heroes other areas of the country could spare. The kids down at UA are great, but I don't doubt that things are gonna go left for some of them. Especially Madonna and Elvis, their quirks aren't the most useful in combat. It amazes me how they even got into UA. I guess the standard for quirks isn't too high, I mean, one of the graduates literally just turns into those speech and sound things from manga. How is that in anyway helpful? I have no idea. Did he still graduate? Yes. Is he still living? Also yes. This still doesn't mean I'm not worried. As much as I hate the two of them, I wouldn't know what to do if I lost them for good.
"Now you stay up here, I'll go make sure we have enough groceries for the week."
Kanna nodded and ran into her room. I really hope it's a manageable situation out there, I'm nowhere near prepared for this. I looked through the fridge, then the cabinets, and luckily I didn't have to go out today. I went back upstairs only to see Kanna sitting by the door of her room. Usually she doesn't keep it open, but this time she did.
"What's wrong, kid?"
"I don't like being alone like this."
"I know, I know. It sucks. But you have me, alright?"
"How'd you deal with it? I know you're pretty much used to this by now."
"I guess you could say that." I sighed and sat next to her. "Can't say I've learned to enjoy it though."
"Oh..."
"It'll be fine though. We have each other. Alright? We'll get through this. We don't have any other choice but to, cuz really, what's the alternative?"
"I guess you're right." She leaned against me, looking off to the side. I hate that look. I hate how defeated she looks already. "I'm just so worried. What if they don't come back? How long will they be gone? How are we gonna pay for stuff? What about taxes? Neither of us can cook on top of all that. Looking at the odds, we're fucked."
"Hey!" I pushed her away. How could she possibly say that?! "We're gonna make it godammit! You better quit thinking about the odds right now. If I could manage it at 9 years old, we can manage this together in our teens. So what if it seems unlikely? That doesn't mean it won't fucking happen at all. Don't give up the fight before you even started swinging. Our parents are out there risking their lives for us, we can't sit here and give up on ourselves. It would make all their efforts meaningless. I know your scared, but we can't let the fear drag us down. It has to be a motivator."
