The next morning Oralie was making breakfast in the morning and Sophie came in looking miserable.

"Morning, Sunshine," Oralie said.

"Morning, Mom," Sophie said with a pained tone.

Oralie frowned, "Your head still hurts?"

"A lot," Sophie said.

"I think I know what is going on," Oralie said.

This got five-year-old Sophie's attention.

"The truth is we're elves," Oralie said.

Sophie burst out into giggles, "Like Santa Claus elves."

"No," Oralie said.

"Then why don't I have pointy ears," she asked.

"You don't get pointy ears until you are a few thousand years old."

Sophie slouched.

"Elves also have abilities," Oralie said, "Like you. The voices you hear, those are thoughts. You are a Telepath."

Sophie took a minute to process this.

"What about you," she asked.

"What about me?"

"Do you have an ability?"

Oralie nodded her head, "I'm an Empath."

"What's that?"

"It means I can feel other people's emotions. I can also tell if they are lying."

"Can you tell me what I'm feeling?"

Oralie felt Sophie's hand.

"You are feeling curious, nervous, and is that fear."

Sophie yanked her hand away.

"It's okay, Sophie. I know your fear. Most elves feel it."

"What do you mean, 'most elves?'"

"Well, sometimes elves don't manifest an ability at all."

"What happens to them."

"They live their normal lives, but are judged for the rest of their lives."

"That's stupid. You can't judge 'em. They don't get a choice on how much power they have."

"I agree."

"Anything else they judge?"

"You are probably going to be mad. I was mad too. Multiple births."

"Why? They ain't doing nothing wrong. That ain't fair."

"I know. Why do you think I left."

"I thought you left because people were attacking you."

"That too. But, I saw how unfair that was."

"What else?"

"Well, I was part of the rulers."

So you were a queen."

"No, I was a councillor."

"What that?"

"Basically, twelve of the most powerful elves ruling over the elves."

"Okay."

They went outside.

"Why did we come out here," Sophie asked.

"You hear Alex's thoughts," Oralie asked.

"Yeah," she responded.

"I want you to picture you are creating a wall. Blocking thoughts. Shield your mind."

Sophie did as best she could.

Then all the thoughts went away.

She relaxed a lot.

"Do you think I would be judged in the Elvin World," Sophie asked.

Oralie couldn't tell her why she thought she'd be judged.

Sophie gasped, "Because of my eyes?"

"Sophie did you read my mind?"

"Yeah."

"You're not allowed to."

"Why not?"

"How would you like it if someone invaded your mind."

"Sorry."

Oralie's face softened, "It's okay, you didn't know. Though next time ask permission, okay."

"Okay."

She asked again, "Why would I be judged based off my eyes?"

"Because all elves eyes are blue or most of them but if they do judge, tell me."

"Okay."

"Well, we'll never deal with that because I never plan on going back."

"Why not?"

"I fear if I went back, they'll put you and me in Exile."

"They ain't going to do that, Mom. Aren't they?"

"I don't know. Sometimes you ain't knowing where your destiny lands."

Sophie looked down.

"Ain't going there."

"Same."
