"MOMMA, O LE A TATOU O!" Y/n shouted from downstairs as she helped Natia tie her shoes, yelling to her mother in Samoan that they were leaving.
"FAATALI LAIA! FAATALI LAIA!" Y/n and Natia's mother, Sefina, rushed down stairs, her purple night gown flowing behind her as she jumped the last step.
Translation: "Hold on! Hold on!"
Y/n gazed at her gorgeous mom as Sefina brushed her back side, pushing her thick curly hair behind her ear. Y/n felt herself smile with envy. "I hope I grow up to be as beautiful as you, Momma." Y/n smiled, sitting up from the ground after she finished tying Natia's sneakers.
"Huh? Uh....Ua e toe tautala Iapani, e te iloa o loʻo ia te aʻu se faʻalavelave!" Sefina whined like a child, crossing her arms over her chest.
Translation: "You're speaking Japanese again, you know I have trouble with it!"
Y/n giggled. "Then start learning more! I said, Talosia ou te tupu aʻe e avea ma aulelei pei o oe."
Translation: "I hope I grow up to be as beautiful as you."
Sefina grinned, cupping her daughters face gently. She shifted her eyes to the wall, as if she were thinking of what to say in Japanese, the language her daughters and husband spoke in most. "....You are...only...16...You have lots of years left...to be as gorgeous as me!"
"Are you saying I'm not gorgeous now!?" Y/n teased, making Sefina slap her daughters' arm playfully.
"Faanatinati! E le pine ona alu le pasi! Sefe ia Tinamatua!!" Sefina demanded, kissing y/n's face multiple times, finishing her farewell with a tight hug.
Translation: "Now hurry! The bus leaves soon! Be safe at Grandma's!"
"Okay, okay!" Y/n giggled, prying her mom off of her. Sefina then moved to 9 year old Natia, picking her up and kissing her passionately. "La e fiafia, Natia! Y/n o loʻo pule, o lea faʻalogo i lana tala, lelei?"
Translation: "Have fun, Natia! Y/n is in charge, so listen to what she says, okay?"
"Yes, momma!!" Natia laughed, hugging her mom around the neck.
Y/n turned to her father, Haruki, giving an excited wave. "Bye daddy! Take care of mom while we're gone!" She beamed, picking up her suitcase and Natia's duffle bag.
"I will. Protect your sister on the trip to Kumamoto, okay?"
"Mhm!" Y/n assured, pushing open the front door and immersing herself into the searing summer heat. "See you in August!"
"Bye-Bye!!" Sefina jumped up and down as she watched her daughters walk down to the sidewalk.
"Y/n's mother was from the Samoan Islands, and married a Japanese man, who is y/n's father, and moved out to Miyagi. I've known y/n since we were five, so I knew her family quite well, especially Sefina." Maki explained over the phone.
