When the Battle began the Z FIghters attacked as a Unit on Nappa and Vegeta.

Yes.

Vegeta got involved because he saw that the strongest one, be it Piccolo, was leading and even showing techniques that the other Z-FIghters were following and succeeding against Nappa.

Even weakening him.

One thing that Piccolo or the Z-Fighters were unaware of, was the Saiyan tails.

And because of that, Vegeta had his own strategy.

He told Nappa and asked him to divide the unit Z-Fighters.

While he created an artificial moon.

Nappa agreed and at full power, took down the weakest members of the Z-Fighters.

Which was of course, Tien and Chaotzu.

Once he got them divided from the others, he took them down.

Killed them.

That left Krillin, Yamcha, and Piccolo.

These 3 had to hold their own against Nappa and Vegeta.

But wait- something was amiss.

For Vegeta and Nappa began to change.

Piccolo looked up and saw that the moon had appeared.

But, how could that be?

It wasn't nighttime right?

And wasn't it destroyed by the one called Jackie chun?

In any case, they focused their attack on the artificial moon.

But to no avail, because it was made of pure energy.

If anything, it made it grow.

And that increased the transformation.

And now, there were two BIG problems to deal with. Along with their increased powers as well as high intelligence in their Oozaru state.

Now, Gohan and Tommy were bouncing through Snake way.

They were given their new gi's that had King Kai's symbols on them and they were sent off to the fight that either preserved or doomed their world.

When they arrived at the check in station, Kami was there waiting for them.

But something was off.

Kami was weak.

Weaker than usual.

That meant one thing.

Piccolo was close to death.

And if he dies so does Kami.

And then the dragon balls.

Which would lead to the journey to Namek.

But that was a long way from what needed to be dealt with right now.

Without any time to spare Kami transported them back to the lookout.

From there, they were met with Korin who gave them a pouch full of Senzu beans for the fight.

Gohan and Tommy took one a piece before Tommy put the beans in a safe spot on his body and they journeyed through the air to the battle field.
