"Where were you?" Charles said angrily. He had a small backpack with him. On his back of course. I guessed it had a map to wherever we were going and some water and snacks.

"Sorry. My dad was awake. He started asking me all these weird questions, like where I was going, and not to get into any trouble." I looked at him to see if that was good enough of an excuse. He studied my face, then nodded.

"Okay, whatever. So, you ready to get going?"
Charles asked me.

"Yeah, I think so. But um, where exactly are we going?" I never thought of it. Where are we going to start? All we had is evidence, and it might be too late to know anything. It's already been a few days!

He pulled out a map. I guessed right. "The morgue, in the hospital. It's located in the basement. Once we reach the basement, I don't know if there'll be staff members or guards. Probably not guards but you know, definitely people." He seemed uncertain. I could tell he wouldn't be able to take much more heartbreak. His emotions were starting to show. I felt my eyes stinging. Was I about to cry?

"Are you okay?" Oh crap. Charles saw.

"What? Oh um," I sniffed. "Y-Yeah I'm fine."

"You don't have to do this you know," he put the map away. Charles looked at me. I looked at the ground.

"I'm okay. I'll still do it." I said softly.

"What? I can't hear you," Charles scrunched up his face.

"I SAID I'LL DO IT." I never did that before. Yelling at my best friend? That's not me. Maybe when we're playing his game system, but never before out of anger. I think I still never did. Something came over me, because that wasn't me.

Charles looked hurt, but his voice was strict. "Don't talk to me that way. What if Alice hears?"

"Alice? Alice is dead! She can't hear us! Besides, why should I care? You always seemed to be her favorite." This was all true. She really did seem to like Charles more. I was always jealous of that. But still, I wasn't saying these things.

Charles was raging with anger now. The mad scientist's eyes were back, and his face was burning red. His muscles tensed and he stared at me. He understood that this wasn't me. That I wasn't saying these things, and that this was jealousy talking. Yes, that was it. Jealousy was talking.

Charles calmed down even though I was still blazing with fury. He started walking towards me.

"I know you don't mean that," he said calmly. I didn't mean that, did I? I was jealous of him.

"Stay away from me," I said. I didn't want to hurt him.

"This isn't you. I've know you for years and this just isn't you." Yes, thank you! Help me Charles.

"STAY AWAY!" Help me Charles.

Suddenly, he lunged forward and hugged me. I tried to break free by thrashing around but his grip was strong. I realized that I wasn't going to be able to be freed of his grip, and accepted it. I started sobbing into his shoulder. Thank you Charles. You helped me.

He brought us down so we were both on our knees, and continued to hug me. I gained control of my arms and my mind, and slowly put my arms around him. We hugged for awhile. When I stopped crying, he stopped hugging me but held my shoulders tight.

He looked me in the eye and said, "I need you, Cole. Alice needs you. I need you to be strong for us all. You're the reason I haven't broken down in tears yet. You are my best friend, Cole. Don't let jealousy ruin it. I'll always be here for you, if you are for me." He stood up and backed off of me to let me breathe and process what he said.

I stood up and looked at him in the eye just as he did to me. "I'm sorry Charles. That wasn't me. You knew that. I promise that I'll stay by your side for as long as I stay sane."

I never thought I'd break down in front of Charles like that. At 6 in the morning in my front yard? Never thought such
a thing would happen. Neither did I think that this would happen to Alice...

"Alright. So, wanna get back to solving this case?" Charles and I were both calm, we forgave each other. He knew about my feeling of jealousy. Something that he needed to know.

"Let's go, you're driving!" I ran towards his car. Which was small, but could fit a passenger in the front and 2 or 3 in the back.

"Shotgun!" I called back towards him.

"That's the only other good seat in the car!" He called back.

And so the journey officially began.
