The men leaned further in the oversize chair as if the black velvet devoured him. He was waiting.

"What are you?" I asked.

He smiled. "Your first wise question. Only fools strive for what they cannot comprehend and transform in unfathomable beasts."

"A beast? Speak clearly, no more riddles!" I was mocked enough today.

"A few adopt that name. Others title themselves devils. Most prefer angels."

"Servants of God?"

"If a god exists, they have forsaken their divine creation. Why else have we lived through eternity? They forgot us to whither like frail flowers."

"Scaring me?"

"If you fear the truth. Once your mortal body tears off, the infinity remains yours. You spend unknown ages, imprisoned until your power breaks the charred shell. Then time catches up and you hide again."

"How?"

"You will realize it soon."
