backyard bushfire blues

i have an acacia tree
in my backyard
that i love.

sturdy powder white trunk with
twisting branch-rungs sprouting berry-red hair
wooden ladder of infinity climbing to the stars

jack's beanstalk was wondrous
but my acacia tree leads to
cloud castle nine times nine
a glass dome space hubble greenhouse
situated amongst twinkling lights
refracted in prismatic curved half-sphere
reverse iridiscent disco ball
dusting my skin in glittering gold

my acacia tree bends its spine down
so i can swing myself on
wrap my appendages around
in an unmoving tree-hug

and i don't have to shimmy up a stalk
heave myself over frozen clouds
battle my way past an oversized man-child
just to hold his gold's light in the corners of my eyes

my acacia tree rises nobly
floats me up to the milky way
where i can sip on
galactic honeydew wine
and lay my head to rest on
olive canopy cushions
boughs folded over my back
in a leafy embrace
it sure is lovely and warm in space

my acacia tree rocks me to sleep
on the starlit treetop
of smooth watermelon milk dreams
and microwaved forehead kisses
leaves whisper sweet forgettable nothings
along the lines of
you are my fruit baby
i will protect you

they draw a smile on my face
with their lovely platitudes
and as i toe the line of
deep comatose sleep
a magical hole hollows out
in the middle of leaf bedding
and i feel my leaden body
spinning falling
falling spinning
spinning falling
falling spinning
i extend flailing arms
and my fingers snag onto
whitewash twigs, acrylic leaves, fabric flowers
quick quick quick
knit them into a set of backpack wings
they are made of my acacia tree
they should have levitating properties
help me to fly, acacia wings!
flap! fly!

rustling leaves and biting wind
falsely deceive my ears
because i'm still plunging downwards
excuse me acacia
i think you're going the wrong way
you're supposed to lift me up
not cave a hole in my bed
and drop me like a shed leaf
to the ground

knock knock acacia
i rap on the trunk
white dust shakes off
mixes with scraped knuckles
as they rake down the tree
...thanks gravity

where powder came off
gnarly nether-black undersurface peeks through
blood eyes open from knots
following my descent
acacia, is that you?
you see me?
then stretch out your limbs
and catch me in your branches
and restore me to glory
in your ever-loving arms
acacia, do you hear me?

oh no
the ground is coming up, acacia
i love you, acacia
you brought me to heights unseen
you made me a celestial phoenix
you let me roost on your canopy among the planets
you dressed me in your leafy hair
you fed me, acacia
you love me, acacia
don't you?

you had a fire ant
in your backyard
that you loved.

she smoldered your body
with burning iron footprints
she danced on your head
and set your hair ablaze

she was a heavy little coal
and your shoulders wilted and drooped
because you couldn't bear her weight
and she fell off
and died

but technically, you died first!
so who's to blame?
