Part 1 of Optimus and Ratchet comic!
This is my favorite ship from Transformers Prime.
My lore of all this is that Ratchet and Optimus were a bondmates long before the war. But because of Optimus' duty and the war itself, they had a hard time coming together. Giving Ratchet that sorrow, angry vibe over the years. Originally being Orion, when they came together, Optimus always had this urge to try. But, again, the call of duty and unknown attacks made him think to not put his lover in danger. For their safety, and in Ratchet's request, they kept their relationship a secret. Only one bot knew, which was Bumblebee.
Bot, that is.
Miko so happened to stumble upon this information, when Optimus and Bumblebee were talking about it. Optimus wanted to do something about it, since it was more peaceful and possible than on Cybertron. Miko and Bumblebee then encouraged him to do something. Though they never heard of Optimus' plan, they just knew it was the next day.
Coming to their personalities, Orion was a bookworm - and I still think him to be. I would think him to be bashful and kind; being incredible stubborn when it comes to helping others. Ratchet was already in medical and in the "More That Meets the Eye" series and including other information, he was much less cranky during his youth. Personalities fitted the most, specially when both are hardworking people and wanted to help people as much as they could in their power.
I would also like to think that because of being so far from each other, Optimus or Ratchet will send "I love you" or "How are you?" through their sparks. The best times were when they actually got to meet in private to enjoy each other company.
With that being said, with Optimus being bolder and more confident in Orion, he pulled this move.
And in the next part, I can imagine Ratchet being a tsundere.
