She felt light in a way that she hadn't all weekend. She thought that she would hurt more after officially breaking things off with Clawd, after having that conversation she knew needed to occur to end things properly. She feared that she might fade into the haze of grey again like she had after Transylvania, and had been truly scared at how much her mental health seemed to rely on being with Clawd. After her father had pushed her away for so long she had learned to not depend on anyone but herself. He had jaded her so much that she found trusting people so hard, near insurmountable. She'd held herself together after Clawdeen had decided she was no longer worth their friendship, after hearing about her Uncle's death and taking that too-long plane ride back to her home country. She hadn't broken even then, but one angered conversation with Clawd and suddenly she'd been falling into a hole so deep that she never thought she'd be able to climb back out again.

The prospect of that happening again had terrified her. It had made her hate the bond even more than she already did, fearing that it was that link between them that had caused her to delve so deep into that foreboding darkness. The weight on her shoulders lifted when she'd walked away from him in the library, feeling that painful tug on her chest even over the constant warmth of her bond with Cleo that had been cancelling out the effects since Saturday in that skylight cafe. And yet, despite the pull, she hadn't fallen backwards again. She'd gone through the day without even wanting to look in his direction despite the constant pulling of the chain that tied them together. Then a lunch with Cleo had made their bond surge back and forth with a wave of affection so strong that she couldn't even feel a twitch from their connection.

She furrowed her eyebrows, her mind delving away from Clawd as her curiosity spiked. She noticed the gates of the mansion next to hers (well not next as there was quite a few acres of forest between them, but her closet neighbors) were thrown wide open. There was a rumbling moving truck on the gravel driveway which was teeming with a myriad of burly men carrying furniture and brown boxes. The mansion was made completely of dark grey stone, with green ivy creeping up the sides. It was the first home the realtor had shown them when she and her father had moved to New Salem from the now-coined Old Salem back in Massachusetts on the east coast. She'd been working on the stereotype of vampires liking the dark and dank, and had been entirely surprised when her father shot her down quickly with a scathing insult to boot. It'd been empty the near decade they'd lived here and she wondered who her new neighbors were as her chauffeur drove past the open gates.

Louise was ready with a plate of strawberry and cream brioche rolls (fresh from the oven too - a true saint) when she entered the kitchen, dropping her tote bag onto the kitchen counter then hopping onto the island, completely ignoring the bar stools. She gave Louise a cheeky grin when she playfully swatted her thigh, taking a large (nearly obscene) bite of the roll and licking her lips of the crumbs. "There's someone moving in next door," she said, holding the roll between her thumb and forefinger.

"You know who it is?" Louise asked curiously, leaning against the counter and grabbing a roll herself. She picked off a chunk with her fingers and placed it in her mouth in a very ladylike way that Draculaura didn't care to emulate at the moment.

She shook her head. "I thought I could make them a welcome pie or something, though. Be all neighbourly and stuff like in the olden days."

Louise snorted. "Don't lie to me - you're just nosy."

"I can assure you that I have no idea what you're talking about," Draculaura said snobbily before taking another bite of her roll and speaking unrepentantly despite her full mouth, "I'm an absolute treasure!"

Louise snickered, nudging her with her elbow as she plucked off another piece of the pastry.

Draculaura sobered rather quickly. "Have my family come out of the guest wing?"
