A few minutes had passed when I suddenly heard a knock on the door. I called out that they could come in, of course, as I had expected Mrs. Nelson to be at the door, but that was not the case.

There was a couple standing in the doorway looking at me in shock, as if I had just risen from the dead.

(Present time)

~Y/n's Pov~

They stared at me for a short while until the woman started talking.

"Oh... um... we thought this room would be empty. Sorry... were leaving already." she said and was about to close the door.

"It's fine, no problem." said I. "You can stay, it's not like I have any friends to spend time with." I added with a slight smile.

They stopped in the doorway, not really knowing what to say. The whole situation was kind of weird and you could feel their confusion all over the room.

No one spoke, which is why I wanted to help a little. I stood up, but I forgot for a brief moment what a lot of pain I was actually in. Just as I stood, I collapsed, leaving a quiet whimper.

Quickly the couple was beside me and carefully helped me back onto my bed.

They each grabbed an arm of mine to help me up. They didn't know that there were fresh cuts all over my wrists, how would they know. I had to pull myself together enough not to cry out in pain or I would have to explain more.

But just as they sat me down on my bed, both of my sleeves slid up a bit, revealing a few of my cuts and an already almost invisible bruise from a few weeks ago.

I so hoped they hadn't noticed, but that wasn't the case.

"What's that on your wrists?" the man asked.

In seconds, I rolled my sleeves back down to cover everything up.

I didn't say anything because I had to think of something to say quickly. It was obvious that I couldn't tell the truth.

"Funny story. I'm very clumsy, which explains my bruise, and the scratches came from a friend's cat. Turns out I'm more of a dog person after all and cats hate me," I said, while trying to cover up the panic inside me with a laugh.

I couldn't have come up with anything more unbelievable, could I? I asked myself.

The woman looked at me with a sad face. She said nothing to my arms for the time being, but introduced herself.

"I'm Pepper, by the way, and this is my fiancé, Tony." the woman said.

I was a little confused because of the quick topic change, but I introduced myself anyway.

"Umm... I'm Y/n." I said quietly.

Then they started asking questions.

"And you're an orphan here too?" asked Tony in a soft voice.

"Yes. I've been here a little longer than half a year," I answered.
