Hillel Cooperman has pretended to be a superhero since he was a small child. He conceived of Binny Jordan and her siblings and the story of the Madrona Heroes in the summer of 2012 on a trip abroad with his family. He divides his time between The Stacks and living in the Madrona neighborhood of Seattle with his three children, his long-time girlfriend, their three four cats, and tens of thousands of Lego bricks. The Experience of Being Alive is his third novel.
Binny Jordan is a fictional ten-year-old, has just finished fifth grade, loves to ride her skateboard, and dabbles in things superheroic. Binny conceived of the idea of this book as a way to rescue her and her friends from the Stacks – a place where all literary characters must spend their time when not actually in their own books. Binny lives in the Madrona neighborhood of Seattle with her brother and sister, and her father. Her mom lives nearby. In addition, in her spare time, Binny is the star of The Madrona Heroes Register: Echoes of the Past, and The Madrona Heroes Register: Underneath it All. The Experience of Being Alive is her first novel.
