Shawn couldn't stop thinking about what he had learned in the boutique about Camila having put a dress on hold in the past. At hour three of their road trip, he decided to just ask her about it.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course," Camila replied, taking a sip of the iced tea she had picked up at their last gas station pit stop.
"Did, um...did you put a wedding dress on hold the first time we dated?" He spoke quickly and quietly, almost as if he was scared to ask despite already knowing the answer.
"Oh, um...y-yeah." She shifted awkwardly in her seat. "I don't know why. I was just being weird, I guess. I wasn't trying to be presumptuous, I just—"
"You don't have to explain," he said sincerely. "I just feel bad. You shouldn't have had to go through taking it off hold."
"And you shouldn't feel bad." She reached over and took the one hand that wasn't on the steering wheel into hers. "We weren't engaged. I don't even know why I did it..."
"You did it because we both knew that it was coming. If what happened hadn't happened, we would've been engaged. You and I both know that."
"What if we just agree that neither of us are at fault and neither of us should feel guilty?"
"I think that's a good idea." He looked over at her briefly and smiled. "So...which dress was it?"
"Hey! I'm not telling you!" she laughed.
"What? Why not?"
"Because that ruins the surprise! What if I still wanna wear that dress when we get married?"
"Is it one I've already seen you in?" he asked, pushing for more information. She blushed and shook her head.
"I'm not answering that..."
"Look at you blushing! You're so cute. It definitely is one I've seen before, isn't it?"
"I told you I'm not answering any questions!" she laughed. "I plead the fifth."
"Well, as long as you're the one wearing the dress I'm sure it'll be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen." Camila was sure her cheeks were cherry red by now. "What do you think our wedding will be like?"
"Oh my god." Camila looked out the car window to avoid eye contact, a wide smile threatening to overtake her face.
"What? Too much wedding talk?"
"No," she giggled. "Thinking about marrying you just makes me feel some type of way..."
"Oh yeah?" He looked over at her and wiggled his eyebrows. "Shit, I may have to talk about marrying you more often. Do you need it now? Should I pull over?"
"Shut up!" she laughed hard. They stopped and grabbed dinner in Orlando and made the decision to drive through the night instead of stopping at a hotel. They stopped for coffee in Jacksonville and again in Augusta.
"Three hours left, baby!" Shawn announced as they pulled out of the Starbucks drive-thru in Augusta. "Are you boys excited?" He looked back at the dogs but they were all preoccupied with their tiny cups of whipped cream the barista had given them. He chuckled and looked back at his girlfriend. "What about you? Are you excited?"
"So excited."
"We need something to kill time," Shawn suggested. "Twenty questions?"
"Ooh, fun! Yes. I'll start." Shawn couldn't help but smile at her sudden excitement. "Umm...who was your celebrity crush when you were a kid?"
