☾ Chapter 1: To be a Jeon ☼

Jungkook

"Today is a big day for us, Jungkook," Father says. "The Jeons have been at the top of the pack hierarchy since the pack's formation. You know what that means, correct?"

I nod, regurgitating the words my father has instilled in me since before I could even understand speech. While some human parents play Beethoven for their babies in the womb to attempt to make them smarter, my father repeated this to me to make me stronger. "'Jeons have to be the best. There is no room for failure. If you fail, you're not a Jeon.'"

My father gives a curt tilt of his head, his expression vacant. As the current Xima of the Bangtan Pack, he is stone-cold, ruthless, and a perfectionist. Just because I'm his son does not make me exempt from his normal rugged exterior/interior.

"After you compete, we will finally know whether or not you are my son."

His words make me stare at my hands, bile rising in my throat. I wish I was that other person who is Xima candidate. I'm sure they don't have this pressure to be perfect. I bet they won't be disowned if they fail. Everyone expects them to fail. Simply showing up will get them respect.

I won't even have a family until I win.

While my father heads to finish setting up and talk to the crowd that has already formed, I stare at my hands in complete and utter horror. The marking on my left arm glows, the sun emblem shining proudly. But my marking is still young.

My mom studies me with a solemn expression and I look up at her.

"Who... Who am I going against?"

"Park Jimin, a moon-type alpha."

"How old?"

"Eighteen. He's had his wolf maturity since thirteen."

I swallow. There's no way being a Jeon can save my ass. On paper, Jimin sounds like the better candidate, hands down. Back in the day, moon-types were coveted. They have strong wolves and strong instincts. They have always been able to protect their pack at night.

Sun-types, on the other hand, have always been great for protecting the pack when they are considered most weak—daytime. We have stronger magic in human form and even though our wolves aren't to the same caliber, we would protect the pack while the moon-types stayed on a nocturnal sleep cycle.

I've always found moon-types pretty. I wouldn't consider it part of a sexuality or anything, but I don't know. Moon-types have really pretty wolf forms since they're so strong. They have dark coats that camouflage them in the night and make them great hunters. Sun-types have lighter colorations since we "live in the light."

Even though I shouldn't, I really want to see Jimin's wolf. I want to see if he's a dark brown, gray, or black wolf. I wonder what shade of red his alpha eyes are. I learned that moon-types have naturally lighter eyes and sun-types have darker eyes to help with light filtration.

What color are his flames? I know that statistically, moon-types have weaker magic in human form, but that's not always true. Since moon-types don't stay on a nocturnal schedule anymore, some train hard so they can have stronger elemental magic. Flame packs are considered the strongest because of the variation. Our fire can be any color of the rainbow, with red as the weakest flame and purple as the strongest, most rare flame. It is said that when the pack first formed, there was a member in each family with the capability of purple flames, but nobody has seen it in person in millenia. My father's flames are only green (though it's still on the yellow side). That's still the top twenty percent of all fire types, but still, it doesn't sound as beautiful as purple flames.

"Do you think Jimin will be tough competition?" I ask gently.

She presses her hand over the back of her left shoulder, looking away with pursed lips. This pose is where she stays until she finally blinks, snapping herself out of her daze.

"Don't even think about Jimin. Just win."
