CHAPTER ELEVEN

-: fourth year :-

── IN WHICH ALEKS AND
EVIE WAIT

. . .

EVIE SUDDENLY FELT A TREPID DISAPPOINTMENT beginning to grow in the pit of her stomach as her and Aleksander settled on the grass outside of the Weasley tent, the magical canvas falling and blocking any conversation held within.

It only took her a moment to reflect over the time she had spent with him to realise that perhaps she enjoyed his company more than she originally thought, and now she was realising that perhaps the friendship was only going to last a short while longer; his bodyguards were going to find him eventually, and then he would disappear into the maze of tents and return to Durmstrang.

Perhaps their paths would cross a lot later in life, but Evie had no idea when that could be, as the circumstances of them meeting once more were less than likely.

"You look... sad." The ginger haired girl blinked hurriedly and found her silhouette reflected in eyes of grey-green. Aleksander sat back a little as she focused, settling down onto the surprisingly soft grass. It seemed, for that patch at least, it hadn't been trodden by panicking witches and wizards as they ran from the Death Eaters.

"I do?" Evie replied, watching as he nodded. Her heart thudded mournfully as her gaze found a family stood around their singed tent and she pointed towards it, Aleksander turning to see. "For them. I feel sad for them."

It wasn't entirely a lie, and she did feel awfully bad for the family - but that wasn't what she was thinking about. Of course she had other friends outside of Ron and Hermione (Harry didn't exactly count, he was her twin), but there didn't be the same - and Evie knew of no other word for this but lacked conviction in her choice - connection that she had with Aleksander.

There just seemed to be a balance there. Both had been outshone by their siblings - Aleksander a lot more than Evie had, her and Harry were usually more than equals but there was just one or two times that she had really felt it, but being the brother of Viktor Krum must be so much worse. Both had the same strong interest in Quidditch, both had the same enthusiasm, and both shared a hatred for Draco Malfoy, and what else was better than to bring two people together?

She just hadn't had that interest in solely her in a long time, which was perhaps all she actually needed

"But enough about that." Evie cleared her throat and drew Aleksander's attention away from the group, who were being invited to sleep in their neighbour's tent. It would be a magical one, so the somewhat meagre appearance on the outside shouldn't be reflected on the interior. "Before you go-" She noticed that there was a change in his expression at that, "- I just wanted to thank you for helping me out in the woods. I freaked out about.. I just.. you know."

Her fingers reached for the laces of her shoes, untying them only to redo them. Aleksander laughed, then again as she shot him a glare. "No - hey, I do know." He reassured her. "Although I don't really think you would need much of my help anyway. I didn't do anything when the Death Eaters were there, that was all you."

"Huh." Evie pulled the laces even tighter. "So it was." She smiled slightly, a little more confident that she didn't sound entirely pathetic in front of him. "You were talking with Charlie about a Quidditch match you played?"
