Wilbur turned out to be a horrible dad. Naturally, knowing he raised Tommy by himself, you would think he would be a great father. He was alright at best to Fundy. Wilbur was neglective of his duties as a father to a fox hybrid, and before that he was neglective of Tommy when raising him.
Because of his fox traits, he grew up faster than others, so he was raised by a nine year old Tommy who was way too mature for his age.
Due to Wilbur staying with his friends more often after Sally died from child birth, so he wasn't able to stay at home and take care of Fundy.
