A vast misunderstanding threatens to destroy your relationship with Fili for good. Will he be able to fix it?

As you ran along the halls of Erebor, trying to keep the tears at bay, you earned looks from the dwarves going along with their day. Most of them were more joyous than normal, the king had just announced his nephew's betrothal and the date of their wedding. The future of Erebor seemed bright now, and the loss of the city seemed like a distant memory. But the news that gave everyone else so much joy made you feel like your heart was being crushed. You and Fili had been seeing each other in secret for almost two years now, and at his insistence, hadn't become public with your relationship. You had always assumed that it was because he didn't want you to be exposed to the pressure of dating a prince any earlier than it was absolutely necessary, but you knew better now. You had just been there to keep him company until Thorin found him a "worthy" wife. You had been there to keep him occupied, a simple placeholder for someone else.

A knock on the door pulled you out of the haze you had been in. You assumed it was your friend to who you had sent word that you needed to speak to her. But your heart grew cold when you threw the door open and met the grey eyes of Fili. His chest was heaving, probably from running up the dozens of flights of stairs. The sight of him made tears gather into your eyes again, but you refused to let them fall, hardening your face and crossing your arms over your chest. You didn't give him a chance to speak when you launched into your well-rehearsed speech. Mostly because you knew you wouldn't be able to keep your tears at bay for long.
"What was I to you, Fili? A toy to occupy your time with until you found a better candidate to spend your life with?" You asked, trying to keep your voice even, but a small tremble of the tears threatening to spill bubbled to the surface.
"Y/N, dearest, of course, no-" You didn't give him a chance to explain.
"Were you lying every time you said that you loved me, with every hug and kiss you gave to prove it to me? Was it all a big ruse to make sure that you were not alone until you could be married to someone more "deserving" of your presence?" Your hands were starting to fall from the tight bundle you had gathered them to.
"Y/N, just let me-"
"NO! No, I will not let you talk. You have been doing all the talking, and apparently, all of it has been a lie, so I will not listen to it anymore. Goodbye." You slammed the door shut in his face.

Fili could hear the deadbolt clicking into place.
"Y/N! Y/N, please let me speak with you." He spouted into an explanation of what had happened, but you were not listening anymore. You were laying on your bed, buried under the covers, a pillow on top of your head to prevent you from hearing anything Fili said. Tears were wildly running down your cheeks, and you were sobbing, letting yourself sink back into the pool of miserableness you had from risen to shout at him.

Fili pounded on your door for a good while, tears in his eyes as well, shouting time and time again how he had not known about the marriage and how he loved you, how he had always loved you, how it had been real. But as you showed no signs that you even heard what he was saying, he had to slowly admit defeat. The dread of the situation was slowly starting to sink into him. What if this couldn't be fixed? What if you would hate him forever, and he would have to marry someone for political gain? He could not let that happen.

He was only forced to retreat when your friend appeared to the door, and read the situation.
"If she hasn't opened the door by now I don't think she wants to see you." She stated, staring at Fili with cold eyes.
"But-"
"No buts, I will not hear anything from you. I know what happened and I am furious with you. It is only because you are the prince of Erebor that I will keep everything I would like to do to you contained inside of me. However, my patience is not endless so I suggest you go to hell." She smiled sweetly and knocked on your door.
"Y/N, it's me. He's gone." With those words, she threw one last look in Fili's direction, who knew that sticking around would not be very good for his health, prince or not. He walked away but his heart still ached when he heard the door to your room open.

Fili slammed his fist to the table of the meeting room, making the mugs on it jump.
"How could you do this, uncle?" Heartbroken by your words but seething with anger towards his uncle, he had marched straight into the meeting Thorin had been hosting, and chased everyone out save for Dwalin and Balin.
"You were getting nowhere in your romantic life, and I am not getting any younger, Fili. The people need to know that there will be strong leadership rising to the throne next, and you having a wife assures them of just that." Thorin spoke with a tone that made it seem like the topic was finished, but Fili was nowhere near done.
"I was! I was getting somewhere! But you ruined everything with your announcement!" Fili was just starting to gather steam, and
"I was gathering the courage to tell you! I was going to propose during the next feast we had after talking to you but you had to go and ruin everything!" Fili knew he probably sounded like a child, but right now, he couldn't care less. Desperation, fear, and anger were the feelings that were in control of his body right now, and he was not thinking clearly.

There was a deep silence as the echo of Fili's words disappeared into the void of the long halls, his arms still crossed tightly, his chest heaving, and eyes burning with unshed tears of desperation.
"You need to terminate the marriage immediately," Fili demands, stepping closer to the throne of his uncle.
"Fili, it's complicated, I don't want to insult-"
"I don't care if it's complicated, you will call the marriage off or I will leave this kingdom. I do not wish to marry her, I want to marry Y/N. If she will have me after you mucked everything up." The look he sends towards his uncle is filled with venom as he turns on his heel and starts making his way towards your door again.

As he slowly calms down while making his way to your room, he does admit to himself that Thorin couldn't have known that the two of you were seeing each other, as he hadn't told anyone, and you had kept your relationship hidden tightly. But still, Thorin should have asked him, he reminds himself as a new wave of anger ignites in him. He pushes it down as he reaches your door again, praying that it is just you. Your best friend is a woman of her word, and Fili has no doubt that if he keeps pushing things with her around he will end up getting punched, at least, no matter how princely he is.

Taking a deep breath, he begins to plead to you again.
"Please, Y/N, let me in. All of this has been a big misunderstanding."
"Please let me in, I feel like a salesman standing out here."
"Let me in, I will explain everything, I love you." He releases a shaky breath as he starts to realize that you really might not want anything to do with him, at all. He slides down the wood of your door, his back resting against it, pressing his head into his knees as he lets the tears free.

He isn't allowed to wallow in his sadness for long, as the door behind him opens, and he falls backward, letting out a surprised sound as he lands on his back. He meets your eyes as you let out a giggle that surprises even yourself, watching him laying on his back on your floor. Fili feels a warmth spreading inside him at your laugh. Oh, how he had missed it.

He leaps to his feet, grasps your hands into his, and launches into an explanation.
"I swear, darling I had no idea. The marriage was Thorin's idea, he arranged it, I didn't know. I found out the same time you did, you have to believe me. I would never do something like that, I love you too much, I cannot imagine my life without you, please just let me-" He was cut off by your lips.
"I know. Balin visited me earlier and told me everything. I was in the bath when you knocked so I couldn't open sooner." You explained, brushing your still wet hair behind your shoulders as you gave him a small smile.
"I'm sorry for not giving you a chance to explain." Your words were sincere as you cupped his face into your hands.
"I should have known that you would never do something like that." Fili shakes his head at your words.
"You don't have to apologize. It was a misunderstanding and it is solved now." He presses a soft kiss onto your forehead, pulling you into a tight hug as he pulls a deep breath through your hair. You smell like the lavender and honey soap he gifted a few months ago just because, and he smiles as he pulls away, gesturing to the door.
"Are you ready to meet my family?" You still for a moment. It is a big commitment, meaning that the two of you could not hide anymore, meaning staring eyes. But the inkling of doubt and fear disappears when your eyes meet his. You will be alright as long as you are with him.

Wooo, this was so much fun to write after I got it to work and my writer's block gave in and let me write without fighting tooth and nail!
