Chapter 35, "Children of the Night"

Donovan stopped by the Knight Manor after he left the Coven that evening. Leonard decided to go separate ways as he had to handle some things with the precinct. As soon as he got to the mansion he was greeted by his hyperactive nephews and niece who were playing at the main hall. Hubert laid down a big size of some kind of a grey tarp and let the children play with washable chalks on it.

Mia was sitting with her little legs sprawled on the floor, scribbling something like a cat(?). Her silky black hair up in twin ponytails was covered in white and pink chalk dust. Her face still looked clean while her brothers were like dipped into a gallon of colorful powders.

Donovan's half brother, Damian was sitting a bit farther away, apparently drawing on the tarp too, he only nodded his head at his brother and continued his art, though Donovan couldn’t see what the werewolf was drawing from this distance.

"I see. So finally the chalk monster finally got to you," Donovan joked with a serious face as he avoided the boys from letting them draw on his clean navy suits making the twins laughed louder and let their uncle lift them up in the air. "Come on boys, let me show you a trick," he said as he put the boys down and walked over a doodle of an animal that look like a duck.

"Who drew this?" Donovan asked as he crouched down pointing at it.

"It's me, uncle Donnie, I drew this duck!" Vilo said pointing at his masterpiece proudly. Hiro immediately immitated his twin and pulled Donovan to show him his drawing of a dragon.

The alpha smiled, he could feel a heavy stare from Damian but decided to ignore it as he put his palm over the drawing, his eyes glowed golden and that made the children excited, even Mia decided to stop her doodling to see what they're up to.

In a second the drawing of the duck started moving and detached itself to come to life like a pop-up figures. The duck start quacking, walked towards Hiro, pecking on the floor. That got the children hyped as they started to asked Donovan to make their own drawings came to life.

He complied to their wishes making them screamed excitedly when Hiro's huge scribble of dragon now flying in the air, roaring and surrounding the big room, the house maids even came over to watch the magical display.

"Aww, I forgot to draw it breathing fire, it would be cooler," Hiro said sadly, suddenly he had Donovan held a shining chalk in front of him.

"Now you can," Donovan said putting a chalk that he had tinkered with his magic into the seven year old's hand, the drawing of the dragon approach its artist and Hiro tried drawing in the air with the shining chalk. It actually worked and after Hiro finished, the dragon flew back up in the air and start to constantly breathing chalk fire making the children clapped and start sharing that one chalk taking turn to draw something in the air.

The alpha made Mia's weird scribble alive and it started to meow making the toddler clapped excitedly. Donovan couldn’t help but smiled at the children's reaction. Never thought that the most useless spell he learned secretly when he was ten would be so much appreciated. He invented this spell all by himself, showed it to his mother and got hit on the face instead. He still remembered what Angelica told him at that time.

Slap

"What is this garbage spell? Do you think you can take over the Knight Corps with this stupid thing? Get out of my sight!"

Donovan clenched his eyes shut at that, it was like he could still feel the sting on his cheek.

"That's impressive."

Donovan lifted his head to find Damian stood beside him admiring the flying chalk dragon. It's strange to have him standing so close to Damian without animosity in the air between them. He couldn't remember when was the last time they both had a proper conversation. And here they were, Damian literally being amazed and complimented his most useless and harmless spell.
