Birmingham cemetery, Birmingham, 1921:
I T was a rather gloomy day in England, and for a second, Thomas Shelby believed that the weather had to do with how his life was passing by, days turning into weeks, then months, eventually turning into years. The times were dark and dangerous, every single choice and thought creating more mess that seemed to be too deep to step out of sometimes.
Though many things have changed, some of them hurt just the same.
That damp afternoon a new grave was dug out for someone dear and yet estranged. A vicar was standing in front of a casket, which was ready to be rolled down six feet under and forever be buried, hurting the hearts of some for an infinity. The priest was giving out his prayers, trying to send this dead person into a calm journey after death.
A group of men stood on one side, all without their hats as they mourned sadly, honouring the deceased, but even if their hearts hurt deeply for their friend and comrade, no one looked more distraught than one Ada Thorne as she stood the closest to the hole, holding an almost 2 year old boy in her arms, who didn't have a clue as to what was happening or who he was burying. Ada wore all black, her eyes tearless despite the storm in her soul.
As the vicar finally allowed the workers to put the casket down the grave, Ada looked even sadder, but a hand wrapped itself around her arm, giving her comfort so the Thorne female met the eyes of Polly, who also wore all black, looking serious and silent before she cast a glance at her nephews Arthur and John, the latter looking fed up with his baby's crying. Esme stood next to her husband, silent and respectful like everyone wished her to be.
The casket was finally lowered so the vicar gave Tommy a nod, letting the man move forward as he passed Pius Jackson, who stood next to him with a dull look on his face, clearly only there for Ada.
Ada watched Tommy stop near the hole, his look as cold as it always had been, and she wanted to punch his face that second, but contained as Tommy looked at the tombstone of his friend, swallowing a bitter realization that he didn't spend enough time with this person. "I promised my friend, Freddie Thorne, that I'd say a few words over his grave if he should pass before me," Tommy began with a clear voice, looking around the unpleased faces of Freddie's communist friends, but the cold look of his own sister made him feel worse than any of the harsh glares of strangers. "I made this promise before he became me brother-in-law, when we were in France, fighting for the King."
"Amen," Arthur mused seriously, standing next to his family and Tommy could've sown he heard Ada scoff under her breath, but such disdain of his sister didn't make him skip a beat as he instead focused on the big hole that would soon turn into a grave, Freddie never coming back into their lives.
