Eleanor's apartment, Birmingham, 1921:
S T A R I N G through a window to the streets of Birmingham, Eleanor felt oddly free. And yet, the better part of her was also foolish to have accepted Tommy's plead to come back home. They came back in the early morning, and yet despite having told Tommy to turn around twenty of times, in the end, even if he had stopped and asked her whether she truly wanted to come back to Nina, all the times Elle told Tommy to continue driving to Birmingham.
Of course, it had been foolish to leave. And of course, Eleanor regretted the decision, but nothing felt more freeing than being away from Nina. From Sabini or all the gang wars of London. All the clubs and the murdering even if only a day had passed.
Eleanor knew it was a temporary stay. Tommy had promised her that Nina can believe Elle had been kidnapped by him, thus risking his life this way, and although Eleanor knew it was a terrible plan, a part of her followed Tommy blindly. She still remembered his face when she told him she'd go home with him. She regretted that choice now, especially when Elle was almost certain Pius or the entire Shelby family would soon learn of her whereabouts. That she was even alive.
Eleanor had to kill Nina too and this out of course thing for her was not helpful. But, as she pondered by the window, night sky hitting Birmingham's streets as she resided in a two room flat Tommy had given her for comfortable stay, she still loved Thomas Shelby and being with him again was almost certainly the biggest fresh lump or air she has gotten in years.
Nevertheless, the thoughts to escape and go back to London were far too huge for Elle to remain calm. She knew Nina was searching for her already, perhaps even aware what had happened, but Tommy had promised everything went calmly and there were barely any witnesses. Eleanor tried to believe in Tommy's words that she would be able to go back and finish what she had started, but another part of her believed he would try to change her mind so Elle knew she couldn't have gotten too soft on the man.
And yet Eleanor couldn't help but feel free even if being in Birmingham possessed a risk of seeing Campbell or even her brother. Although Elle had gotten a chance to see Pius, she hadn't talked to him in two years and knew he was still angry at her. She had asked Tommy that when they drove home, but he was rather adamant to tell her in case she'd wish to turn around. Eleanor had asked that, but in the end, she still got to Birmingham with hopes that, perhaps, Pius would change his mind if he'd see her again.
Eleanor thought about the Shelby family's reactions too. Polly, who had been ruthless to her in the end, would surely still remain the same way. Arthur and John, the two men she missed too much to fathom, would surely hold disdain. Ada, who Elle had shockingly learned was living in London after Freddie's also surprising death, was the only family member Eleanor doubted the reaction of. Her and little Finn, but the young boy had been too naïve to understand before.
