43. Kick off an Arcane Apocalypse

Laylah POV:

I look over to Douxie. He is holding Merlin's staff close to him. I was holding mine.

Archie rubs against our legs trying to comfort us.

"It's all gone. Everything" Douxie starts

"The Heart of Avalon, Camelot... Merlin...."

He kneels down and picks a small piece of a green gem.

"Maybe we should say a few words"

Claire suggests looking at Steve.

He nods and starts to say random words.

"Yeah, okay. Ahem. Battleship. November. Fruit punch. {Crys} Purple..."

"Oh, what can I say about Merlin?" I start

"He was.... he was, uh...."

"He was everything"

"He was everything we had" Douxie finishes grabbing my hand and lumping to the ground together.

I layed my head against Douxie's shoulder. I didn't feel anything....no emotion, nothing.

Archie runs up to us and sits down in the middle of us.

"We'll get through this, together" Claire explains.

"We need you too, now more than ever. The world, our friends are in danger"

She hands Douxie the book.

"And the Order's about to kick off an arcane apocalypse" Archie says with zero confidence.

"Merlin didn't tell us anything" Douxie and I say at the same time.

"And of course, he gave us a book that I or Lay could never read"

"I mean, what is that supposed to be? Orcish? Elvish? Naga snake tribe"

Archie takes a look at the book closely. I do the same. We both gasp.

"It looks like...Ancient Draconic"

Steve starts to freak out.

"Draconic? [Gasps] Dracula!"

"No...." Claire corrects

"As in dragons...."

"As in..."

"Charlemagne, the Devourer" Archie says

"Charlemagne, the Devourer" Douxie and I repeat.

"Keeper of the most sacred stone and treasures. A vicious dragon"

Archie started to butt in. It wasn't his usual self. He seemed nervous, scared even.

"Which is why we shouldn't trouble him. Maybe someone else can translate"

"Laylah?"

I shake my head. "Not a chance"

"Come on, Arch!" Douxie argues

"This is clearly about the Genesis Seals. And If the order finds them first—"

Archie rolls his eyes

"Yes,yes,yes were all doomed. I suppose well have to pay Charlemagne a visit"

"What about Jim? I need to find him" Claire enquires

"Go back to Hex Tech. Research any dark magic that could help him"

Douxie instructs

"Okay, Let's go Steve"

"Aw--! But the dragon quest!" Steve whines

"What're you going to do, get eaten again?"

Claire drops a shadow portal below him and he falls in screaming.

"Wait Claire! Before you go! Take Laylah with you"

"What?!" Claire and I remark.

"I thought Laylah was going with you?" Claire questions

I nod in agreement. "Yeah Doux, why can't I?!" I ask walking up to him

"Laylah, I need you to be with the others, you have to protect you and Nari"

I couldn't believe what he was saying.

"But Douxie!"

"Please listen Laylah, this for the sake of the world...." Douxie sighs

"It's what Merlin wanted best"

I couldn't argue. He was right as usual. I trusted him. He was the only true family I had left.

I nod and put my opinion aside. Just this once.

He kissed my forehead gently.

"I'll be fine, just say safe okay?" He says looking at me then at Claire behind me.

She nods and takes my hand.

"Come on Lay, we need to go now"

I take a look back at Douxie and watch his face fade away as the shadow portal consumes us.
