When Peko was executed he blamed himself for all of it. He got depressed and went to find the others the next day. When he found them at the restaurant he planned to say his goodbyes and kill himself. But, after Hikyo denied his forgiveness and let him bow before him, letting his wounds reopen. He decided that that was it and he wanted to kill himself right there, letting himself bleed to death. When the others saved him he realized how other people still care about him and decided to learn from his mistakes and be more of a guardian to his friends even volunteering to stay by the sick with Hajime and Mikan even if it meant him catching the disease.
