Bucky smiled at his still sleeping wife before getting up.

He slipped on a robe and grabbed the paper from the front of the doorstep. Three words caught his eye. U.S.
DECLARES WAR.

"Serves 'em right," he muttered.

"Served who right?" a wide-awake voice chirped.

Bucky looked down to see Evelyn standing in front of him. "Some people sunk our ships and hurt our people."

"Are we gonna fight?"

He nodded slowly. "Yes. Where did you learn that word?"

"Mama talks a lot. You and Uncle Steve do too."

"Clearly we all need to be more careful what we say around you, missy."

"I'm old enough to know."

"No, trust me, you aren't."

Madeleine yawned as she got up and asked, "What's going on?"

Bucky showed her the paper.

She let out a sigh. "I hate to say it, but it was only a matter of time. Buck, what if you get drafted? What then?"

Bucky shook his head. "I'll do my best not to."

"But if you do?"

He placed a gentle hand on her stomach. "Doll, I promise I'll do everything I can to get back to you, Evelyn and our coming child."

Madeleine nodded slowly. "All right. I hope you keep that promise, Barnes. I've already lost one husband. I can't lose another."
