It takes weeks of small gifts, notes, and awkward "hellos" before they actually get anything going. While still in doubt, Spot decides to be nicer to Race, even though he's sure he'll just get hurt again.

Race, on the other hand, has never been more happy and proud. He begins taking notes on the small things he learns. His likes, his dislikes, what sets him off, etc etc.

Their text conversations grow longer and longer as the two get closer and closer. Small notes on gum wrappers turn into letters arriving in mailboxes.

For the first time in years, Spot has a friend. And as much as his mind tells him otherwise, he's going to stay by his side.
