Kitty
I quickly found out what Vinnie was nervous about.
Down at the road, only two minutes away from where the group parted ways from us, was another iron fence that stretched to the left and to the right for a pretty wide distance.
Vinnie hopped out of the car to open the gate and then he pulls us through after getting back into the car. We drove on a gravel path through a thick yet lush forest, until the road curved to the right and it turned into an actual driveway.
My eyes widened when I saw a large house with another iron fence around it, but this one had the gate open, inviting us into it.
It's beautiful, with large windows and vines growing up the sides of the 70's styles home. The front yard has luscious green grass and the driveway curves around the front of the house in a sort of circle that leads back to the main gravel drive.
I'm in absolute awe, especially when I see a wooden fence that runs along the back of the house, meaning that there's a hidden backyard thats waiting to be explored.
And the best part?
There's a swing on the wrap around front porch.
Vinnie pulls his car into the circular drive in front of the front of the house and parks, the two of us staring up at the gorgeous house like we're equally blown away with how pretty it is.
I ask quietly while staring up at it, "Whos house is this?"
He turns off the car and answers with waver, "Ours."
What?
I snap my head to look at him with eyes as he unbuckles his seat belt. He climbs out of the car so I follow suit, quickly following him up the driveway with a million questions filling my head.
Vinnie hops up the white wooden porch stairs that needs a fresh coat of paint, the steps creaking slightly, as he does.
I take a step up the stairs, and glance around the porch to find there's patio furniture and potted plants that are dying, and it makes me look up at Vinnie questioningly.
He bends down to the welcome door mat and lifts up the corner to retrieve a gold key from under it, and when he stands up straight? He turns and holds out the key to me.
I stay glued to my place, not moving an inch as I wait for him to explain and he gives me a sad sort of smile before walking up to me.
He still holds the key out to me as he looks down at it in his hand, "I was the one that chose Maine..."
Why-
He explains further, "I was looking at vacation houses for us... and I know that Maine isn't like the greatest place to vacation to but... they have whales... and I know how much you like... whales."
I stare up at him, my throat getting tighter and tighter by the second.
Vinnie shrugs, "I was just trying to find something- anything to make you feel better and I happened to stumble on this." He then motions to the left to the patio furniture, "I saw the porch swing and knew it was the one... I guess I got lucky that there was a house down the street big enough for everyone else to stay at... honestly I wouldn't even call it luck- it was pure chance."
Vinnie takes my hand gently and turns it over to press the golden key into my palm, his eyes still not meeting mine.
"We're not staying here forever- unless you want to... this is just until we can confirm your safety, and then it can truly be our vacation house." He lifts his eyes to meet mine and firmly tell me, "This location hasn't been disclosed to anyone but the idiots, and I trust them with them with my life. You're safe here."
