They’re barely a few feet away when Aziraphale’s corporation collapses and he can feel the bodily fluid rising up his throat and about to projectile out of his mouth, before he feels the other angel’s arms wrap around him so his head is aimed away from his body.
Once Aziraphale’s corporation comes up for air, he apologizes, “I never do this. I can usually lick venomous frogs with the best of them.”
Then he laughs, “Of course I also usually never lick venomous frogs.”
Jophiel laughs above him, “Well, we’re officially living in times where never is the new always.”
Stomach more settled, Aziraphale stands up straight, then leans back to support himself.
Followed by him bursting into another fit of giggles once Jophiel’s face comes back into view.
“Oh dear. It seems some others have inhabited the same corporation. I’m surrounded by Jophiels.”
Jophiel turns to look, and upon seeing no one behind him, he smiles, “Is that so? How many do you see?”
Aziraphale replies, “Oh please don’t ask me to count. I’d really rather not throw up over either of us. But there’s more than one.”
Jophiel doesn’t even blink, “Always wondered what the same corporation would look like on someone else.”
The Aziraphale’s eyes go wide, “What if you…Knew each other?”
Jophiel lets out a startled laugh, “And what exactly am I supposed to do?”
Aziraphale pouts, like it should be obvious, “You just…get close to each other?”
Followed by him lurching again, and Jophiel once again grabbing him so he doesn’t vomit on himself.
Somehow, Jophiel seems to have moved them to another part of Heaven, still holding Aziraphale while he wretches, and Aziraphale having no memory whatsoever of how they got here.
When Aziraphale looks again, there’s now more Jophiels standing behind the real one (he’s pretty sure), so to distract himself, he says,
“I saw Lucifer’s mentor burn his robes.”
Jophiel nods, “I always wondered what would’ve happened to one of us if we Fell.”
Aziraphale lets out a wheezing laugh, “I think that would be rather obvious.”, and when Jophiel waits, Aziraphale adds, “I lick a venomous frog!”
But apparently Jophiel’s already moved onto another subject, “Did you see Lucifer when he…”
“Went up in flames?” Aziraphale finishes, and when Jophiel nods, the white haired angel shakes his head, “No, I did not. I looked away for just a moment.”
But then, rather suddenly, he realizes, “Oh no. You did, didn’t you?”
However, Jophiel also shakes his head, which makes Aziraphale let out a breath he didn’t realize his breath was holding, as he hears Jophiel say, “I only heard the flames when they burst from beneath our feet.”
Then he adds, like an afterthought, “So odd, being in the same seminar where it happened and yet seeing nothing.”
Which is all the prompting Aziraphale needs to make his eyes go wide, and confess, “I wanted to see it, and I know a thought like that is unforgivable.”
He’s expecting a Starmaker such as Jophiel to be disgusted with his confession, but he’s surprised once again when Jophiel instead agrees, “I completely understand. When you think about it, it’s so…incredible.”
