much to her surprise, milani had received an invitation to a birthday party.

specifically, maddy perez's birthday party.

she wasn't that informed with the girl, and considering how small it was supposed to be, she didn't understand why she was being invited.

maddy said it was because of how easy it was to be around her after the night they met. since then, it wasn't hard for them to act like they actually knew each other.

not that milani was complaining, she still wasn't sure if this circle was fit for her.

especially since both rue and jules were supposed to go but had now flaked. apparently, the two wanted alone time.

milani wouldn't think about what that meant.

seeing as the party was in the howard household, milani wondered what that meant for maddy's family.

she didn't want to dwell on that too much, though.

as she met the mother of the howard sisters, suze (what she'd like to be referred to as), she couldn't help but find her both responsible and irresponsible in the same sense.

on one hand, suze wanting the girls to be in a safe space to drink was definitely an upside, but having a bunch of teenagers in your house drinking doesn't seem too responsible, either.

but they'd do it one way or another.

early into the night the girls found themselves pouring drinks, listening to music, taking pictures, and overall just ignoring the world behind them.

when it was time to sing happy birthday, milani noticed that cassie looked a little.. off.

not that she knew her well enough to know what "on" looked like.

still, milani couldn't help but think that she looked guilty of something.

the cake the blonde girl was holding contained candles that looked like far more than eighteen, while the cake was decorated with a picture of maddy and a car milani suspected wasn't hers.

milani caught sight of maddy's genuineness, especially when hugging cassie. maddy seemed like a honest good friend and someone you could depend on in a time of need.

on top of that, she was a really pretty girl. her prettiness and confidence could possibly come off as mean girl behavior but milani decided that wasn't true, it just didn't seem like maddy.

cassie gifted maddy a scrapbook of the two, a gift on top of many but it wasn't hard to tell that maddy was particularly fond of that one.

milani tried her best to resist the obvious note taking she was doing in her mind.

like how lexi was totally fine with not being included. which was more of a her action rather than an action made by any of the other girls. milani noticed how the auburn haired girl placed herself in the shadows.

or, how cassie had been filling herself with liquor, much more than the other girls (not that she was judging). and how that liquor intake increased with her seeming more paranoid and trying to open herself for whatever was coming next.

and how kat seemed to be catching herself in her thoughts when the other girls weren't. although she was there more than lexi, it was still a little obvious she had a lot on her mind.

on the upside, maddy seemed to be really enjoy her night.

and so did this little short girl milani wasn't too aware of. somehow, she smelled like cigarettes even though she had only been vaping. milani tried to keep up with her name but only could remember it started with a d. or was it a b?
