𝗪𝗘 𝗧𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬, 𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗, not wanting to look at the pity in all their faces when we did. It was too hard. I felt the tears in my eyes, but I didn’t let them fall, not again. Instead, I held onto Clementine’s hand, stroking her knuckle with my thumb.
Clementine: We thought AJ would be the one… finally.
Javier: The one what?
I turned around, eyes glossy as I looked at the man.
Emma: The one who didn’t die.
He took a moment and then he stepped forward, hugging us both with as much comfort as he could. I let out a shaky breath, feeling as weightless as I had in a while, taking in the hug as much as possible, not realizing that this had been what I needed all along. A tiny bit of comfort, just a small bit, from someone who was older. Someone who had lived life, experienced it. And then I realized, what I really needed was my dad hugging me. Just one last time.
Clementine: My little goofball…
Emma: … And my cowboy…
We stood there for a few more minutes, closing our eyes as we tried to calm ourselves down, then we stepped back, looking at our feet.
