𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗘 and AJ, Louis slid a stew bowl down the table to me, sending two more down to the others. Everyone seemed to be relaxed, leaning back at the picnic tables to eat their fill of dinner. The torches placed all around us gave off a warm glow, making me feel almost safe.
Louis: Ladies and gentleman, dinner is served!
He sat down at a rickety chair at the top of the table, Marlon and Ruby joining us on the other side.
Clementine: Thanks. Wow, can’t remember the last time we had a hot meal.
She took her spoon, eating a mouthful with satisfaction.
Clementine: Mmm, this is really good. Right, Emma–
She turned to me, but I was tipping the bowl back down my throat, swallowing greedily. AJ was doing the same, both of us putting the bowl’s back down on the table at the same time, smiling broadly, food over our faces.
Emma: Yeah. So good!
Clementine: Oh, for God’s sake…
She smiled and rolled her eyes, eating her food again.
