A couple months ago…

THE GROUND WAS HIT BY HOOF after hoof as Clementine and I galloped faster and faster as we exited the woods. For a few days, we had only seen a couple walkers milling around shrubs and such, but apart from that, it had been a clean journey. Every time we’d stop, I’d watch Clem as she roasted the newly-caught animal over the fire or got ready to sleep under some branches we had carefully set up for the night. I don’t know if it was the thought that we were finally going to be a family again soon, or if I was just giddy from the lack of sleep and extra long horseback journeys, but I wanted to tell her how I felt. She deserved it.

But I didn’t. She was so set on finding AJ again, I couldn’t add to that stress. Besides, I’d tell her soon, I would. Once we found AJ, I would tell her. That way we could really be a family. That was if she felt the same… Yeah, I was scared shitless. But that was nothing to worry about right now, not when I could feel the autumn wind crashing through my hair, nearly blowing off my cap, and a strong scent of fire drifting towards Clem and I.

It was a big shift from the usually quiet journey we had been having lately, and the two of us caught each other’s eyes from beside each other, sharing a look of concern. Trouble was ahead, but, honestly, when wasn’t it? The two of us cracked the reins on our horses from Richmond, sending them speeding down the path and turning a sharp corner by the edge of a ravine, dust flying up into the ash-y air.
