Once upon a time, in a land surrounded by flourishing trees and scenery, there lived a young and attractive prince.
Although he had everything his heart could desire, he soon became spoiled and egotistic. He was unkind to those around him.
One night, an old widow knocked on the door of his castle, asking for shelter from the cold. She offered one single rose in return. Appalled by her appearance after she tried to seduce him, he turned her away. She warned him at once not to be deceived by her appearance, for beauty lies within.
When he dismissed her again, the old woman's disfigured face melted away and revealed a beautiful enchantress. The prince immediately tried to apologize, but to no avail, for she figured that there was no love in his heart.
As a punishment, she turned him into a hideous beast and placed a dark spell on the castle and of those who lived within.
Ashamed of his appearance, the prince concealed himself in his castle, with a magic mirror that was his only view of the outside world.
The rose the enchantress had offered, was an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st birthday.
If he could learn to love another and earn their love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time.
As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope.
