I - Dear Older Sister..

It has certainly been a while
Perhaps because the distance
Between us now is over a mile
Even if we live under the same roof
Our hearts have gone astray
Our light is being put out with a poof

Remember the days when we were coiled up in our shared room
Living the fantasy of fighting Mister doom
Or roaming amongst the planets or the asteroids in space
Suited up in space suits made of a pillow case
In our little pillow tent and some decorative lace

But then you moved away, and you didn't care
Now you barely call and it's not even fair
I thought I was family, but I am not even close
You were the one to fight me and you made sure I lose
Picking fights after fights, like our past didn't matter
I didn't do anything to you, but you stirred drama like a spoon in a batter
I still love you and you'll always be my sister
It is just hard to be doubtful if I will ever be yours

If you don't want to talk, it is fine with me
Actually, it is not, I am just longing to see
You again and can we just let this be
In the past and open a new page,
And put all this hate away like a bird in a cage

I have sent you many messages and letters in the past
Perhaps, heal our wounds and broken ties in a cast
But you never respond, your blood has run cold
Maybe I should be like you, strong and bold

Explanation:

This poem is rather straight-forward with its structure and meaning. It is directed to an older girl who seems to have left for college.

Her younger sister begins her letter with sadness that she hadn't been able to contact her sister, saying that the long miles shouldn't have made their hearts drift apart, yet it did. She remembers fond memories from the past when they were kids, playing in a world of make-believe.

When it was time for college, the older sister left, cutting contact with her younger sister. It is rather unclear as to why the sister had done so, but it was said that there were many fights between the two and it severed their bonds.

From the younger sister's perspective, it seems like she hadn't done anything to upset her and it was rather the older sister that managed to stir up the problems and pick the fights. She wished that things were different and she promised that she still had a love for her sister, and hope that they still have a chance to reconcile.

It is also revealed through the last verse that she had sent her several messages and letters hoping to reach her, but the older sister doesn't reply.

She ponders if she should finally let it go like her sister did, and forget her exactly how the older sister had forgotten her.
