1995

I stepped off the Metro and proceeded to stroll down Crenshaw, making my way towards my Auntie's house. My cousin, RJ, had just gotten out of prison after doing a 5-year bid and that called for a celebration. So, my Auntie wanted to have a block party/cookout type of shindig and she needed my assistance with decorating.

As I approached the house, I could smell burning charcoal and embers coming from the backyard, which let me know that my Uncle Ronald was putting in work on the grill already.

Uncle Ron could throw down like it was nobody's business! I loved coming to their house for gatherings because unless you arrived super early, there was no waiting around for food or festivities.

When Uncle Ron and Auntie Joann got it crackin', it was crackin'.

I noticed Auntie J and my cousin, Ronisha, carrying groceries out of the car and into the house once I arrived. I took it upon myself to help them.

"Wassup, scrub?" I greeted Ronnie and she looked over her shoulder at me while grabbing multiple bags at a time.

"Fuck you." I chuckled and gave her a quick side hug before going to grab a few bags out of the trunk.

"How you get here?" She asked, standing there for a moment and waiting for me to grab bags so we could carry them into the house at the same time.

"The metro."

With a scoff and a shake of her head, "Yo daddy is something else, forreal."

"Girl, don't I know it."

Despite growing up in Baldwin Hills, I spent a lot of time in South Central as a kid because this is where my mom was from and where my family resided.

He didn't have a problem coming around in the past, but once my mom died four years ago, he didn't come around as much. Then, once he married his new wife, Francesca, he just switched up and stopped coming around entirely, which meant getting down here was solely my responsibility. I didn't mind it because I was old enough then, and beyond old enough now; but it was crazy to see how he changed up.
