There is nothing to show how insignificant you are
than the ebb and flow, growth and death, of nature.
While the world you have spent a lifetime building
and perfecting and loving crumbles, billions of others
continue as if nothing happened. Lives begin and end
and go on while you pick up the ruined pieces of your
life on your bloody knees. Your nose runs and your
heart slows and your wrist aches and your bones
creak and still, the world is oblivious. Still, it turns.

There is nothing to show how significant you are
than the bow and twist, dip and turn, of nature.
Watch how the branches shift beneath your weight,
how the leaves stir and scuttle out of your path. How
your footsteps drive away squirrels and birds and insects.
The world changes to accommodate you, the sunlight
strikes your back while shadows shroud your front,
how you pass unharmed through the shadowed forest
that kills the wren and maims the coyote. Still, it embraces you.
