DEBUTANTES AND DRESSES

EARLY THAT MORNING, Lily sat in her bed as she stared at the invitation sitting on her bedside.

Last night at dinner, Susannah had given both Lily and Belly an invitation to be a debutante this summer.

Lily, of course, wasn't sure if being a deb this year was something she wanted to do but Lily saw how excited Susannah was for Belly and her to be a deb and so she felt obligated to say yes.

Caleb, of course, saw how conflicted Lily was last night and so he had decided to pay her a visit this morning before they went down for breakfast.

"Hey Lilo." Caleb smiled as he entered Lily's room.

"Hey Cale." Lily smiled at her older brother.

"I'm sorry about last night. I should've spoke up when mom was giving you shit." Caleb apologized as he sat down in front of Lily.

"I'm glad you didn't. It would've made things a lot worse with mom." Lily sighed as she leaned against her headboard.

"You know that I didn't mean to put you in that position, right?" Caleb asked as he looked at Lily worriedly.

"I know, Caleb." Lily reassured her older brother.

"I just, I should've known better. I saw how you were because of alcohol and I shouldn't have put you in that position, even if I didn't mean to." Caleb told his sister sadly.

"You guys wanted me to have fun and I did. I had a great first night back because of you. Don't let what happened with mom ruin that." Lily told her brother causing him to sigh and nod.

"Have you spoken to mom yet? Or anyone?" He asked, referring to last nights argument.

"No and I don't plan to. I don't wanna explain to Jeremiah, Belly and Steven about me going to rehab all summer and I don't want to hear mom lecture me about the dangers of relapsing for the 20th time." Lily exclaimed with annoyance.

"Jer, Belly and Steven want what's best for you. If anything, at least tell Belly and about mom, I think she's just scared of losing you again. You went down a very dark hole after dad died and she doesn't want to lose you to that again." Caleb explained as Lily listened.

"And she won't. I'm continuing my weekly therapy sessions with Caroline on zoom all summer." Lily informed her brother.

"Good. She's helped you a lot." Caleb nodded before looking over at the deb invitation.

"Have you thought about being a deb?" He asked as he looked over at Lily.

"Kind of. It's just, I don't think being a deb is something I wanna do but I don't wanna disappoint Susannah." Lily frowned in frustration.
